Seems every kid today is "on the spectrum" according to their parents. Keep in mind these kids mostly appear to be raised in homes where parents try to be the friend of the child and don't ever say no to them in fear of hurting their feelings or harming their self esteem.

On social media it's like a badge of honor to have an autistic child. Some of the women on my Facebook are more than happy to shout loud and proud that their kid is "on the spectrum" although he/she hasn't been actually diagnosed by a medical doctor.

This post obviously isn't aimed at the children that do indeed have autism in any of its forms. Just seems today any bad behavior or personality quirk is autism.

I’m 40 and have 2 kids, and I literally have never heard another human being even suggest their kids were “on the spectrum” IRL. Only seen that on tv. There are a few I suspect are, but their parents don’t seem to be talking about it. Granted, I don’t do the Facebook.

Americans have developed an odd obsession with having some form of mental thing. The whole I’m add, I’m OCD really started it off. I don’t know why people who don’t actually have these diagnosis think it’s cool, but it’s odd

No. Nor do my children.

I just don't take much stock in mouthbreathers who provide anecdotal evidence from Facebook as a way to support their claims on alleged reality.

From a parent who has a Autistic child, you are a fool.

Please STFU and stick to talking about something you have at least know one sliver of knowledge about

My cousins add was so bad that if he couldn't get his medicine his body would literally shut down. He couldn't hardly get out of bed, he'd get migraines, be really hungry all the time. It really is a terrible disease

My sister and brother-in-law hace an autistic child.

It's not a badge if honor.

In fairness to the OP, it does seem like a lot of parents and kids claim autism, ADD, or some sort of ailment to explain poor behavior.

There will always be stupid people who claim bullshite when their kids do not act the way that want them to act or the way society deems acceptable.

But to insinuate that parents want their kids to be Autistic is just plain idiotic. I promise you that there is nothing glorifying about it and if he had to deal with a actual Autistic child for one day, he would STFU and just talk about hot chicks or what he saw in the quad last week.

The increased prevalence of Autism is the product of human nature.

It has always been around but just less diagnosed. The rapid rise in diagnosis coincided with the first FDA approval of a medication to treat autism symptoms - Risperdal in 2006.

Once there is money to be made on a treatment, the drug companies will spend whatever it takes to build profit. It’s really sad. We were using Risperdal to treat the symptoms for well over a decade before it was “approved”.

So to answer the OP’s question - he is partially correct. It well may be overdiagnosed in America.

But I would never suggest someone’s child WAS or WAS NOT on the spectrum. It’s one of the most difficult and debilitating mental illnesses for the kid and the parents. It’s really between the family and their medical team and not any of your business.

No, it doesn't.

If you want to see what autism is like, go volunteer at a special needs event. It sucks.

We used to just write these kids off. We'd ship them off to a special school and forget about them. At least we are trying to make more of an effort to help them have normal lives.

Out of all of the people I know with kids, only one of them says their kid has autism, and he actually does.

Eta: He's a really cool little dude though. I enjoy hanging out with him

Take an hour of your life and watch Vaxxed on Netflix. Its pretty eye opening.

After seeing "Vaxxed" & "Berzynski: Cancer cure cover up", its hard to have much faith in Federal government.,,,

Could some people be lying? Sure.

But, if they have a neuropsych eval (performed by a clinical psychologist) followed up with a confirmation / diagnosis by a psychiatrist plus likely OT and GP observations, it’d be hard to discount. The process is pretty strenuous.......it’s not even remotely close to ADHD in many ways.

Understand, dealing with spectrum disorders can be heartbreaking. My son huddled in the fetal position in a “cooldown room” at school for his first week in Kindegarten was a sight that haunts his mother and I. He has come a long way and the thousands of hours of therapy and thousands of dollars spent are well worth it.

I truly would hope that no child would ever have to suffer any form of Autism:( And, for the parents, a giant hug.

We’re lucky. Our boy is loving, energetic and so forth. I’ve seen the intense cases.......it’s terrible.

Risperdal is scary scary shite. But, the only real medicinal application they have had.....and it’s an antipsychotic.

We knowingly avoided it due to the possible side effects (esp permanent tics). We’ve got a regime now that’s working wonders.

ETA: are you a clinician or parent or patient? You speak words of wisdom :)

What about the case of my daughter who was born just a little over 1 pound. Stayed in the NICU for 115 days and stayed on oxygen and a heart monitor for exactly 1 year. Who is 4 now and non verbal and diagnosed with Autism. Who we take to NUMEROUS therapies and doctors visits and Pay enough copay’s and doctor bills to put a couple kids thru college. Who also has a food aversion from tubes being down her throat for nearly 4 months, so we have to purchase pedisure every pay period to help her maintain weight.

I need to just tell my wife that nothings wrong. Our daughter doesn’t have anything wrong with her... we are simply making excuses for her behavior.

You and the op and go frick yourself.
