Movie releases today! Who is seeing it opening weekend? I will be Sunday. What were your thoughts on Spielbergs return to silverscreen popcorn 80s Nostalgia?

I'm seeing it tonight. It's getting pretty good reviews.

85% on RT. Better score than I expected.

I'll probably see it this weekend.

I was expecting to see this more in the 50% range given the number of things that people could potentially complain about in this movie.

been reading about this movie for a while, not sure what people will complain about that is legit. I saw some stuff about Iron Giant but in the book he was actually one of the choices of robots that the players could pick.

I remember reading during production that some aspects like which robots they pick are different than the book because they couldn't get the rights to everything mentioned in the book.

I can understand not being able to get the rights to supaidaman and other slightly obscure anime. But replacing that with Iron Giant is a better choice for domestic audiences I would think.
There may be some hardcore book readers that get bent because "it's not like the book"..similar to some of the comic book nerds..But everything I have heard was that Spielberg did this thing right.
I know the challenges won't all be exactly the same and it seems he meets Art3mis way earlier in the timeline . But I don't care about that either. I think they had to make the real life portion of this story more important and engaging for mainstreamers and that will make it appeal to a wider audience.
Either way I'm hyped to see OG's birthday! Hyped to see the last great battle scene that looks to play out and cannot wait to see what they come up with for the gate and key challenges other than The Race.
If I had to guess..The copper key is not on ludus in the tomb of horrors

I enjoyed the book despite itself. It's a neat idea for a story (The Matrix mixed with nostalgia culture and video games) but was poorly written and desperately needed to be edited. I feel like any changes the movie version makes will likely be an improvement.
I probably won't get to see it this weekend due to family onligations but I definitely want to catch it in theaters before it's gone.

After searching, I'm a little surprised that Toho gave them the rights to Kiryu. They can be stingy with their licensing.

Admittedly, I am not a savvy enough reader to realize that the book needed this. I did not read the book, but purchased the audible book read by Wil Weaton about a year ago before I knew it was being made into a movie.
I have listened to the complete audible story more than 3 times and very much enjoy certain sections of the story. I have a really hard time thinking of things I enjoy in a critical way. I don't generally look for things wrong if I am enjoying the ride I am on, however I can understand other people like yourself that see these things while reading .
I do hope the changes from the book to the screenplay address some of the weaknesses and make the story even better and I hope that the sequel that Cline is working on is better as well.

I wish there was some record of who actually turned Spielberg down..because there is a LOT of IP in there and a LOT of it is not WB's.

Yeah. I just finished the book and though it was entertaining, i found it to be pretty lazy writing. It relied too heavily on nostalgia and Parzival always seems to just so happen to have "mastered that game a month ago" and things like that. I get why it's that way, he's a hardcore gunter and it makes sense to have knowledge about all of Halliday's past. I just think they could have tried a little more to tie that stuff in there.
I've seen the previews to the movie and it does not interest me. Too much CGI. Yes, i know the Oasis is a digital world, i just don't prefer CGI movies.

Just watched it 2 hours ago.
Visually stunning. CGI was perfect. Probably my favorite movie since Django.
Avid gamers should love it. Pays homage to people that grew up in the 80s and 90s in a major way. Met my Finnish wife playing a online video game, so the movie really hit home with me on many levels.
10/10 for exceeding expectations.

Seeing it on Friday. Can’t wait

Granted, I haven't read the book again since devouring it at release, but the Gates weren't anything like originally portrayed in the novel.
Loved it anyway. The Jade Key level truly was brilliant. I'm just uber disappointed in the Temple of Syrinx not being included. I'm not a Rush fan, but I really wanted to see what that would've looked like.

Great movie and really fun. Tons of 80s and 90s nostalgia packed in here, going to have to rewatch it to see all the things I missed
Also never knew I wanted to see an Iron Giant Godzilla fight but damn

I’m assuming 3D is the way to go?
