I caught some bass a couple weeks ago but was in a hurry so threw them in a bag and put in the freezer. Is it too late to filet and eat them?

Someone told me that if I didn't gut them or anything then I shouldn't eat at this point.

Yes, I'm an idiot. Rarely keep fish. So are they trash?

I don't know why, but that just does not sit well with me. They are probably fine, but I'd probably chunk them.

Don't keep fish unless you are going to clean them.

I know it shouldn't, but this annoys me. Be more responsible if you are going to keep fish, baw. Quit being lazy - you owe it to whatever you are catching/killing to do whats right.

I've kept fish whole and on ice for up to a week without issue, but never frozen. You'll likely need to thaw them, clean them and eat them shortly thereafter. I cant think of why they wouldnt be safe.

I do not think you should thaw them, clean them and then re-freeze them though.

He didn't know. Now he does.

PHPlayer - Don't fillet or eat those fish. Dump them in saltwater for the crabs, or dig a whole and put them in there next to fruit/vegetable garden.

I would be skeptical, but thaw them out and see if they turn to mush. If they are not too soft to filet, they may be ok.

Filet and cook immediately, next time filet before freezing. They shouldn't be spoiled but may taste a little fishy.

I don't have a problem thawing, filetting, and eating right away. May try that. Trust me, I feel like an arse. I've catched and released thousands of bass. This is one of the few times I decided to keep for the SO.

Anyone who hunts and fishes regularly has been caught in a position with game they kept and couldn't clean immediately even if that was their original intention. I wouldn't beat yourself up about it - we've all been there.

In the future, just keep them on ice until you can clean them. They should be good for a week or so if you keep them in an ice slurry.

In regards to your current situation - there should be 0 risk from a food safety standpoint so long as it's cooked thoroughly. As others have mentioned, taste and texture may be affected though.

If you do end up eating them, report back and let us know how they turned out!

They should be fine to eat. I keep some fish whole except for the guts like flounder I'm going to bake. The skin will help prevent freezer burn. Like others have said thaw and cook.
Next time keep them on ice until you have time to clean them. 3 or 4 days won't hurt.

Now you know. Don't beat yourself up over it. I am sure there are plenty of people on this board that have wild game and/or fish way in the back or bottom of their freezer that la been there for years and ain't no good to eat

I didn't want to hijack this thread, but since you brought it up. . . I traded a turkey hunt for a duck hunt last year (I don't duck hunt much), and I just found a bag of breasts from 2 mallards hidden behind some of my wife's breast milk in my deep freeze from December of 2017. Any duck hunters on here who can weigh in on if they would still thaw and eat?
