Bleacher Report

27. New Orleans Saints

The Pick: TE Hayden Hurst, South Carolina

Previous Selection: EDGE Arden Key, LSU

The New Orleans Saints have a legitimate Super Bowl window at the end of Drew Brees' career. The best way to take advantage of that after nailing the 2017 draft is to get him a weapon for the middle of the field and up the seam.

Hayden Hurst might get knocked for being an older prospect (25 at the start of the season) after playing minor league baseball for two seasons before playing college football, but he's a stud. Hurst has the best combination of traits, as a pass-catcher and blocker, to get onto the field right away. In New Orleans, he'll open up the entire offense for Brees, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas and Co.

He still has Daron Payne on the board after the 1st round too.

27. New Orleans Saints: Arden Key, DE/OLB, LSU: Cam Jordan had a fantastic season for the Saints, but the defense still has holes in the front seven. Adding Key gives them another dynamic pass rusher, even if there are some off-field concerns.

27. Saints OL Isaiah Wynn

With the shorter Drew Brees, interior OL has always been important for the Saints. Wynn should go much higher but positional value, and depth of the Draft pushes him down here.

Would love Wynn, getting used to Hurst, and would hate Arden Key (and I’m an LSU fan). Dude has wayyyy too many character concerns and he’s a tweener. Just not a good fit.

Key - no thank you.

Hurst - maybe he is the best TE available this year, maybe not. IF the Saints value a TE that early, I would rather trade back into the 2nd + and pick up another 2nd. Get OL and a TE. I know you have to have a trade partner.

Wynn - love this. It all starts up front.

But then again, what the hell do i know?

I wouldn’t be mad at OL .... I think other than QB it’s the biggest differentiator in teams. A great OL can hide a lot of problems on your offense, and help to keep your defense off of the field. I think theirs a case to be made to take OL in the first 3 rounds every single year

Key is a top 5 pick at a position we need. Where did this character bullshite start from? He had surgery and put on weight. Dropped back down by the end of the season. Key would be a steal at 27. Someone please link actual character concerns.

He is lazy on plays a lot (you'd know this if you watched lsu)

And he had a pain pill addiction and went to rehab.

He's a risky pick . Could be feast or famine.

He was “lazy” because he was overweight. Did you watch him later in the season once he cut the weight he gained after his surgery?

Also people act like we’d be wasting a super valuable pick on him. We’re at 27, it’s a borderline second round pick. If Key is there, you take him.

If this is your concern, you don't understand how common this is in the NFL. I'm not talking about getting help for it, I mean pain pill addiction. Doing anything to stop it is the rare thing. If this kid (yes he is still a kid) went to get help for pain pill addiction, that should be a positive to his character, not a negative. If he went last summer, that meant he was probably popping those pills all throughout his incredible '16 season. Homers probably wish he hadn't gotten help to improve himself and had just kept eating opiates like skittles if it meant a repeat of '16 production.

He was admittedly out of shape at the beginning of last season, but he just had shoulder surgery. No LSU fans were complaining about him being lazy this time last year, he just was over weight this season and had ankle problems so his production went down. Clowney had the same "lazy" moniker when he got drafted but he is a pro bowl DE.

I don't know that we should or shouldn't draft him at 27, I just find it funny how LSU fans turned on this kid after only getting 4 sacks out of an injury shortened season from the guy. Are there risks? He's a draft prospect, there are maybe 5 "low risk" draft picks taken in the 1st round every year, and 2 of those guys aren't more than OK starters/contributors in the league.

When I look at the draft this season, I'm looking for guys that can make an immediate impact because we are in win-now mode. And the immediate positions of need are in no particular order WR, TE, and DE (maybe not DE if the Saints think Kikaha can stay healthy). So I'm down with Key or Hurst. I wouldn't be upset with Isaiah Wynn because OL is crucial no matter what your depth chart looks like, but it's not my first choice.

I'd only stay in the first round if the team absolutely loves someone at one of those 3 positions or if someone unexpectedly falls to them. Other than that I say trade back and fill those spots with quality guys in the 2nd & 3rd round

So, we can get Wynn who would, ideally because of health, start the season on the bench. Or we could get a DE that would play a role and has huge character concerns. OR we could land a starting caliber TE who will open up the offense. Hmmm

I did and didn't see that.

Got any proof?

Unlike, say, everyone else? He may be a little more risky than some others but we're at 27, not 7 so that difference is already getting marginal IMO.

ETA: Not sure he's the right guy at 27 for the Saints. though.

Yeah, I'd say that would work.

Lol@chad504boy

I am not trying to trash Arden Key I just would rather roll the dice on someone else. Like dj chark or Moore. Or Goedert. I'll be fine though as long as we don't draft Lamar Jackson.

#1 QB is Josh Rosen ...just had to get that said.
Obviously we are waiting on the Suh decision to determine the rest of FA and draft.
Looking at teams in front of us, Atlanta is an issue, with similar needs...
DT, TE, OL.
I really don’t like reaching for a TE in the first round. Some good ones this year, but none are first round quality. (OJ Howard will be a star but takes time to develope)
Let’s see what Suh does ( I think we still have a shot, since we haven’t moved on).
I have total confidence in the process with Loomis, Payton, and most importantly Jeff Ireland.

I just don't see how people can look at Key & think he's a 3 down DE in a 4-3.

Maybe after 2 years, but it's still an uncertainty. He has an enormous ceiling, so some team will take the chance. It's much less of a risk for a team that runs a 3-4 though.

I do think the Saints go TE in the draft for some reason. I do not think that Hurst will be the first TE to be drafted.
