has to be Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A remarkable 73 people have been killed at the track. This includes 41 racecar drivers.

Many of the most violent crashes in racing have happened there. One that always has been incredible to me is the death of Gordon Smiley during qualifying for the 1982 Indianapolis 500.

quote:

Smiley talked to his car owner, Bob Fletcher before he strapped into his car. He told him he was going to hit 200 mph, or die trying. This brought back many memories for Fletcher, who owned the car that Art Pollard died in during the 1973 race. Fletcher warned Smiley that he should seek experience from more experienced, older drivers. Many veterans had warned Smiley that if his car broke traction, to not try to correct, as the road racer was used to. Smiley seemed to push the advice off.

Smiley went out for his 4 Lap qualifying run, the average of which would serve as his qualifying time. There is a warm up lap before each run which is used to warm up the tires, but Smiley was pushing the car, hard. He was on the limit of grip through Turns 1 and 2. His foot was to the floor as he headed down the backstraightaway. He turned into Turn 3, and the car broke sideways. Smiley corrected, and the car spun back to the right.

That place is dangerous as hell even if you know what you're doing.

I can't find a link but back in like 2014, Anthony Mason was on LeBatard and he told a story about how Patrick Ewing was really afraid of ghosts. So whenever they stayed in milwaukee, they'd stay in a haunted hotel and he and some of the equipment managers would play constant pranks on Ewing the whole time making him think his room was being haunted

Just YouTubed that one... at least death was really really fast, that was probably the worst wreck I've ever seen. Wonder what he was thinking in that split second between overcorrecting and hitting the wall.

Pauley Pavilion gets a vote. In the 80's and 90's, the ghost of John Wooden was said to walk through the place and the mf'er wasn't even dead yet.

Imagine the paranormal shite that goes on there now.

The old site of Stagg Field at the University of Chicago is kind of indirectly haunted since it gave birth to the nuclear age.

Members of the Manhattan Project built the world's first nuclear reactor, subsequently creating the first man-made chain reaction under the West Stand.

The site today...

An interesting side note is that Big Bertha, the giant bass drum that belonged to the marching band, was stored next to the reactor and became contaminated with radiation. Texas took it off Chicago's hands for a dollar, cleaned it and restored it.

The great Jim Murray said it best when writing about the Indy 500:
