Huntington, WV ... longer read.

quote:

By the time I retired and left Huntington last year, the town had descended into a nightmare. Drugs had killed everything.
quote:

So, having lost your job and needing a fix a couple of times a day, what can you do? You start by asking, pleading and finally stealing from your own family. Then you start riskier thefts—start easy, like shoplifting, then motorcycles, ATVs and cars. Now get a gun and try a few 7-11s or the local branch bank for the funds to get through the next day or two. Given the circumstances behind this situation, it became an excusable or understandable crime. This added to the pressure on the courts to keep the backlogs under control. What used to be a serious offense became like traffic tickets: a public defender, a plea deal and so on.

quote:

Finally, I should acknowledge that my lengthy answer to my classmate’s question was generated by a fair amount of guilt. No, I never abused my narcotics-prescribing responsibilities or forgot the Hippocratic Oath. But there is another type of sin, not just of commission, but the sin of omission. I should have seen this crisis building and spent more time pushing back against the forces that turned my old hometown into a wasteland. More than likely, my efforts would have been futile. Many civic, business and church leaders did see it coming and tried to turn the tide without success. But I do regret not having fought the fight a lot harder. All we can do now is try to learn from past mistakes, and I know there were plenty here.

We'd better figure something out very quickly ... Huntington is not alone. It is out of control across our nation.

The catalyst was docs, pharmacy and diagnostics wanting that sweet, plentiful government money.

This. I am very mistrusting of big pharmacy, and unfortunately I'm getting that way with physicians.

A lot of towns in the mid west and south are dealing with this exact problem.

As opiod and heroin use expose, a spike in HIV infections and Hep soon follows.

We already know what the answer is: prison. Tough sentencing and no mercy.

It's white people. They kinda deserve it, so who cares, right?

Fortunately we’ve got awesome Obamacare with comfy beds and attentive caregivers lined up to take care of us.

Exactly how much in kickbacks do you think docs get from prescribing narcotics?

Indeed. An absolute tragic situation that is unfolding. The epidemic almost appeared to happen overnight too which taxed the courts/police/rehabs on what to do. You can only lock up so many people for so long.

I really hope that DC is able to come up with a legit solution to at least blunt the impact b/c as much as I detest druggies, they need help and they need it now.

America First- Allow our farmers to grow the poppies here on USA soil - cut the importation from Afghanistan, and in the process squeeze the profits from the Taliban and cut out the smugglers from Mexico and other places.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Now we had a deteriorating environment where the downturn in the coal industry that led to unemployment, no healthcare and no access to the doctors who logically controlled their doses of narcotics, and they also could no longer afford the pills. So, we ended up with large numbers of unemployed folks addicted to narcotics who no longer had a medical source to obtain relief from.

Hhhmmmm, how did that happen?

Some sweet sammich trays, rounds of golf, fajitas and other Mexican lunches, and pens.

In 1999....

Lol.

And I’m sure back then some got some cash too.

Yeah, because we all know it's the doctors who have been resisting big pharm and limiting the amount of painkillers prescribed.
