Go in and work a few hours each day and take the full eight weeks? I could understand that. If you are pretending to need to be home 24 hours a day for eight weeks then I can only imagine other stuff you would pretend to do? Is the 9th week some kind of magic moment when a father is no longer needed? Of course not. There are 24 hours in a day. If you cannot work four-eight hours and still give your baby's mother eight hours of relief and help with overnight time then something is wrong with you or you are lazy.
Being a parent requires a lot of sacrifices. Sleep deprivation is just one of those things. Showing your employer you care and need your job is one of those sacrifices.

I got six weeks that must be taken within the first year. I can leave up to 3 times with a minimum of at least a week per leave. I did three 2 weeks blocks. ETA: my first two weeks were after my wife went back to work.

Maybe having and raising kids should be about doing more than the bare minimum to get by while devoting my life to work? Just maybe.
Benefits aren’t just meant to give you the bare minimum necessary to make it through life. They are part of my compensation and a benefit to myself and my family so that I can spend more than the bare minimum time at home.

Bare minimum? Ha! If you cannot fully devote 12 hours a day to a newborn child/mother and eight hours a day to work you are being lazy.

You are literally what's wrong with society.
I get 2 weeks paternity and absolutely would have taken every extra day they would have given me.
It's a different world. Being on PTO doesn't mean you fall off the face of the Earth. We are always in contact. Most people who get these types of benefits are the ones who will only have 2-3 kids max. I'd be upset if one of my employees wanted to come back early from those 2 weeks.

My grandson was born premature. His mother had medical issues which caused them to take the baby early. The baby had severe breathing issues and it took over a week and a half before a doctor would even say that the baby would survive. He had to be transported by a specially equipped ambulance from one hospital to another to get access to equipment the first hospital didn't have. This experience showed me the need for paternity leave for the father. The mother also struggled with issues for weeks. My wife and I had 4 children and I don't remember missing more that a day of work each time. It depends on the circumstance.

Yup I am on what is called "permissive time off" meaning I can take as much or little vacation as I want, and my paternity leave is considered non-sequential so I basically have 30 free days I can take without any questions.

Didn’t have time (or want) to read all 10 pages of this shitstorm. So don’t know if y’all dove into this...
I know we’re talking about paid leave here...and don’t know if this has been mentioned or not, but state or federal workers, school employees, and those working for companies with more than 50 employees are guaranteed 12 weeks, unpaid, by law for paternity leave under FMLA. Whatever, right? Who wants unpaid leave? Well, I had a work issue some time back. Spoke extensively with both DOL and EEOC regarding maternity/paternity leave. If a female employee is given sick leave, short term disability through work (not a separate Aflac policy or something), paid vacation time or whatever, the same has he given to male employees for paternity leave. Even went as far as to tell me they employ attorneys to handle cases like this so all I had to do was let them know what was up and they would handle it.
Don’t know if that is useful for anyone or how many folks will say I’m full of shite, but whatever. Lol.

Wife is due this summer and I'm taking 6 weeks (partially unpaid, mostly vacation days). I'd take 16 if they'd pay me for it.

My company gives parental leave for "parental bonding" and not because it is hard to take care of a kid.

People who don't take parental leave in our office typically show decreased work performance.
People who do take parental leave end up reinvigorated when they come back. Both for being new parents and beacuse they are bored at home and ready to end their break.
