At the fire dept I had 2 shifts off which was about a week. As far as windshields I just didnt accept work. I’m not allowed to work my side job if I’m on sick time or paternity time from fire dept, which makes sense. 8 weeks seems like a lot but if I had that benefit I’d have taken it in a heartbeat.

My employer offers 4 weeks. I took all 4, but probably worked about 80-100 hours during those weeks. I also split them up, 2 right around the birth and then 2 later in the year when my wife went back to work.

I got no extra paternity leave, but I could take all the time off I had accrued over the years, and if I needed to, I could take unpaid medical leave.
I ended up taking a W, Th, F after he was born, another W, Th, F when we could take him home from the NICU, and I'll take some more time once my wife's maternity leave is up before he goes to daycare.

We get 2 weeks I think. We are encouraged by partners all the way down to take any leave we have. I think it's kind of expected if you're gone that long to maybe check email every couple of days or answer the phone is someone needed to call you. If I were to take 4 weeks off I would do that anyway, I don't think I could completely detach from work for a month.
Anyone saying taking leave just means you're replaceable just works for a shitty company. No one is irreplaceable, and if you feel bad for taking time off you either earned or were given, find a new job.

Yes, I meant over those weeks, 20-25 hours each week average. Mostly responding to clients, and working time sensitive stuff. With my workload, I'd kill myself if I came back after 4 weeks without working on pressing needs.
The biggest benefit was not having to respond as timely as usual so I could still do what needed to be done around the house, play a round or two of golf, etc.

The first thing you all need to realize is that EVERYONE is expendable. It's just how much will it cause to replace you.
Just because the company can operate without you for 8 weeks doesn't mean that you're not valuable. It just means the company survived years before you and they will survive after you leave as well.
...surely you all aren't arrogant enough to believe you're that unique that nobody else possesses your skills. I think people tend to overwork and accept a terrible work life balance to maintain the illusion they're necessary because it comforts deep seeded fears.

Everyone can be replaced for the most part the whole don't show them you are replaceable thing doesn't really hold water.
- I imagine you aren't going to just peace out one Friday and show up 8 weeks later on Monday without any contact. It shouldn't be that difficult to keep up with what is going, go to meetings or stagger it.
- And if you are afraid they are going to fire you then you probably already know you are underperforming. Hiring and training an employee to full speed will cost them a lot more than 8 weeks of vacation for a job which requires some sort of special skillset
