he may be a kid that doesn’t come out of the pen well. If he gets hit on a couple more relief outings, I switch him and Gilbert. Labas proved he can perform well as a starter

Its hard for me to believe that if Labas was going to pitch on Wed that he would be pitching today...

That could be but I think Labas only pitched 1 inning.

I think it’s Hess, Gilbert, Labas on the weekend with Hilliard relieving. I think CPM belongs to the school with these pitching priorities:
1. Friday Starter
2. Saturday Starter
3. Closer
4. Sunday Starter
5. Setup man and long relievers.

If Labas keeps it up he should pitch Saturday or Sunday. Securing Labas’ and Hess’ victories is more important than getting a good Sunday starter. And Gilbert will dominate some teams as well.

You may be right or he may not be all that v SEC hitters.

Way too early to tell either way.

Hilliard has been awesome. I'd still like to have him in the pen. If not Hilliard, then Gilbert. Gilbert has the experience for sure which might make him more valuable there, but I feel like Mainieri may try to keep him as a starter since he is a vet. If we can get either Hilliard or Gilbert to move to the pen I think that really improves our bullpen depth. Right now we don't have that legit long reliever guy. It would appear that Hilliard or Gilbert has the potential to fill that, but we'll see if we can make it happen. I think Labas is eventually going to fill a starter role which should allow that to happen.

I've noticed some people saying it's no longer early in the season because conference play has started. There's still a LONG way to go and plenty of good LSU teams have started slow in SEC play and gone on to have success. There's still so much baseball to be played and a lot of lineup decisions to be ironed out.

Hilliard was hit hard also? In his 1st inning he gave up 2 runs. Labas gave up 0 in his one inning. Labas has made a very strong case that he is very deserving of a weekend starting role.

He gave up two seeing eye singles. He's done nothing to warrant moving him to the bullpen.

Hilliard was Hilliard

Missouri scattered a few hits but never really racked the ball with a lot of consistency.

The young man mixed up his pitched well and I'd bet most SEC coaches would be thrilled to have their Sunday starter go six full and just give up two runs.

Missed the point I was trying to make. I think Hilliard did amazing, just didn't think you should go off the one inning to judge Labas as a starter. He was hit hard. I just think Labas deserves more then one inning to be judged fairly.

Nobody thinks Labas is bad, but he hasn't earned a weekend starter role yet. Especially the way our starters performed this weekend.

I wasn't impressed with Gilbert's performance on Saturday. I have been really impressed by Hess, Labas, and Hilliard. Just think they should be the weekend starters imo. In that order. But I don't see CPM doing that until Labas is 100% healthy.

I'm giving Labas every chance to prove himself. He has looked very good in limited action as a starter on a pitch count, but Sunday I don't think he stood out in his short stint as a reliever while Hilliard responded to the challenge very well

We are fortunate to have Labas. We all know you can't have too many arms. Labas will have plenty of opportunities to get in the mix.

Exactly, Bain wants to run it up there - FB, FB and FB. Good hitters will sit dead-red and turn some of those around for key hits. Gilbert could be an intriguing closer with the ability to pitch multiple innings, i.e. 8th and 9th.
Definitely will be interesting to see what Storz can bring to the table.

I think Gilbert gets one more chance with it being Vandy on the road
After that I could see Labas move into rotation and put Gilbert in bullpen to strengthen that area.
When you get to postseason you can always move him back to starting role if you need to.
