Sugar Addiction in Soda is definitely real. I have quit Coke at different times in my life. You will get cravings and headaches for a week or two but after a few weeks you can definitely feel the difference. But I think comparing it to cocaine or heroin is crazy. I used to coke all day long and the times I have went cold turkey is wasn't that tough. I think the ppl that say it is so damn tough are full of shite. When in reality they don't really want to quit.

Powerade zero helped me a lot. It’s the best zero calorie drink I’ve tried.

Thank each of you for your input. I know in the last 8 years I’ve put on probably 25 pounds from just soda alone. I don’t snack a lot or eat a lot of fried food. If I can kick soda, I know my weight will plummet.

Topo Chico is just on a whole new level of carbonation and just tastes so pure. I love it.

Also, pro tip: get the 12 packs of glass bottles of Topo Chico. I find that it "tastes" best in those vessels, as opposed to pouring into a glass out of one of their bigger vessels.

The headaches go away, just gotta soldier through them. Excederin Migraine may help as it has some added caffeine in them.

Been off since the first of year with a couple of exceptions. La Croix makes things easier.

I quit sodas January of last year and have been on La Croix since then. I do have a Coke or Dr Pepper every now and then, but can only drink about half a 12 oz can. Way too sweet now after getting used to La Croix.

I was drinking way to much Diet Coke and I finally made the plunge on Jan 1st this year and quit cold turkey.

As others have said the first few weeks sucked and I had bad headaches and didn't feel like working out or running. Once I got past that it has been pretty easy. Drink lots of water, it helps.

Good luck. You will feel better.

I started drinking green tea (iced tea). I am able to bring a water bottle of it to work each day (use it with ice at work). Have two pitchers I rotate "brewing" it (letting the tea bags steep at least overnight) - when one is empty i use tea from the other one and then use the first to "brew" the next batch. Good luck!

You must be from up north by calling a soft drink soda. In the deep south it is coke.

The headaches from quitting soda generally aren't true physiologic withdrawal as caffeinated sodas have relatively small amounts of caffeine and we see the same symptoms with people cutting out uncaffeinated soda like Sprite. Sodas like Coke have around 5 mg of caffeine per ounce, whereas coffee has 20-40 mg per ounce. You have to drink about 4 Cokes a day to equal 1 small cup of coffee, and most coffee drinkers drink way more than 1 standard cup.

It's largely psychosomatic (in your head) and they frequently last longer than the headaches people get when cutting out coffee (which is a true caffeine withdrawal).

The best thing is to trick your brain into thinking you're getting soda. Carbonated water with artificial sweeteners is your best bet to taper off. Eventually you can cut it all out.

Artificial sweeteners throw your body out of whack possibly even more than sugar. Probiotics and a good multivitamin (I stick to garden of life) will help your body regulate itself.

It’s better to take BC for the headaches and get off the soda than keep drinking them.

And for the guy that said it’s not heroin, LINK
