Quitting Soda

In all seriousness, give me some ideas how I can get off of soda. I drink two to three a day. I try slowly cutting back, but when I do I get horrible headaches. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Just stop buying them. It’s not heroin

I’ve been off since lent. I drink unsweetened tea, water, and La Croix.

I know your frustration,I gave up carbs cold turkey no problem, but took an additional 7 months to get off diet soda and artificial sweeteners. I know your probably talking regular soda, but both super addictive.
My saving grace was green tea- I boil it, then make it into iced tea- of course you can do traditional tea as well. When I need carbonation I drink Zevia. Hadn't had a classic soda/diet soda since July and don't miss them anymore! I sweeten with liquid stevia, but you would be better off with any noncaloric sweetner vs drinking soda on a daily basis. Hope this helps and good luck. Your headaches could be sugar related but I imagine caffeine and possibly sodium are playing a role as well, so don't be afraid of either to prevent the headaches.

Go without them for two weeks and see how great you feel. Water is all you need.
Good luck man.

man, ive always heard they were rough to get off. Thats crazy, as someone has never drink anything but mainly water their entire life i cant imagine. I can prob count on my hands how many soft drinks i drink in a year. When i drink 1 soft drink i feel like complete crap. Couldnt imagine drinking 3 or 4 a day. Man just stop and you will feel amazing.

I figured caffeine is probably the cause.

Yep it's a caffeine withdrawal. Replace the soda with black coffee when the headaches start coming on.
It's funny though most only get caffeine withdrawal symptoms from soda, not coffee.

I stopped drinking soda back in college 12 years ago
Don’t miss at all. Just order bottle water with fast food
Only have soda with the occasional mix drink

Headaches will last 2 weeks. Get some Advil and push through them. Drink lots of water and/or Gatorade

Switch to ice tea or coffee for the caffeine.

I quit cold turkey back in July 2017. Suffered through headaches for about a month. Now I have no problems. I drink sparkling mineral water to get bubbly sensation. I particularly like Topo Chico.
No easy way to get off of something that you are addicted to.

If you have a hard time just drinking straight water, try the 5 calorie crystal light packets. When i was kicking the Dr Pepper habit, they saved the day.
Im on the whole IF deal, so I drink straight water up until noon, then I throw in the crystal light packets with lunch and dinner to curb the sugar cravings I had from not drinking soda.
I dont really notice it at all anymore, and dont rely on the crystal light packets unless im just in the mood for it.
You can always grab a bottle of caffeine pills also if you want to try only water, and use those to kill the caffeine cravings.

Coffee is the best bet. It was for me at least. I quit cokes in HS for track and CC then picked them back up in college because I didn’t drink and got pretty fat.
After I gave them up in my late 20s I switched to coffee after lunch and it helped the weight loss significantly.
I also do unsweetened tea and a splash of lemonade. I get that at just about every fastfood place I go when I travel. Helps the sweet tooth without too much extra sugar and calories.

I never liked sparkling water, but I started drinking it with freshly squeezed lime juice, and eventually tapered off to just liking it by itself. Get your hands on some Topo Chico and drink that for a while. It gives you the bubbly feeling you like about soft drinks, without the loads of sugar. I can't even drink soft drinks anymore after switching to Topo Chico. They tasted so syrupy to me now.
TL;DR: switch to sparkling water (Topo Chico is best; I've tried them all)

Sugar withdrawals are real too though. I don't really drink coffee, tea, sodas, etc. but when I quit sugar for a whole 30 type of diet, I had the worst headaches and cravings for a few days. I can imagine quitting soft drinks if you drink them every day could have an effect like that due to both caffeine and sugar withdrawals.

I gave up diet coke for lent. Had a huge weekend training (2 mile swim Friday, 15 mile run yesterday, 103 mile bike ride today). Each day I get home worn out craving crappy food. I have fallen off the soda wagon hard. Been so good about it until this weekend.

Sugar Addiction
Google sugar addiction, 8x more powerful dopamine response vs cocaine & heroin.
I chuckled @ the comment, but the addiction is real.
