I am also sadder than I'd have expected I'd be after hearing the news. There wouldn't be a team in New Orleans today if not for him, and for that alone I am grateful.

You need to get over it. I have long gotten over that with better understanding.
It was a difficult time, but what matters most is the Saints never moved and he never intended for them to move again. He even fought for New Orleans in several ways Be thankful he brought a winning program to a losing franchise man.
Really try to have some better understanding of the position he was in and appreciate what we still have. I am thankful for the Saints and Tom Benson.

As you should. There is a time and a place. You obviously lack that self awareness. GFY

Reggie Bush actually said a lot more about Benson than that last night on NFLN

Statement from Chargers Controlling Owner and Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos on the passing of Tom Benson:
quote:
Tom Benson was an American original. A Navy veteran and member of the Greatest Generation, his climb from nothing to become synonymous with the city of New Orleans is nearly as remarkable as the man himself.
His contributions to the NFL and flair for the dramatic – I still smile when I think of him and that umbrella on the sideline – were matched only by his generosity. Our deepest condolences go out to the Benson family and entire Saints organization.

Sigh, everyone is going to be on the extremes on this, just like every other topic in this country. He's not the flawless individual most are painting his as, and he's not the devil either.
Like all of us, he's a flawed individual, that did a lot of good and also some not so good.
Like Mr. Perfect, for many years, I could not get over the San Antonio debacle. People are underselling how bad that was, when the city needed him the most.
But...he redeemed himself big time.

You know nothing about operating a business on the billionaire level.
Sometimes you say one thing to get the real result that is needed.
Mr. B saved the Saints.
His ultimate actions with the Saints and the city of New Orleans speak volumes.
Thanks again Mr. B.

You're delusional if you think Benson was bluffing. He had every intention of moving. Tagliabue stepped in and stopped it.
Again, you're unable to remove emotion. I've said he redeemed himself and I have no ill will. He saved the Pelicans for sure, but if Goodell was commish during Katrina rather than Tags, I bet we'd have the San Antonio Saints.
Jerry Jones probably was also an undercover ally. He didn't want anyone creeping into his territory so probably was very anti Saints moving.

Mixed emotions about Benson. As an owner he originally was cheap and resulted in us being terrible for a while. Then of course he was close to moving the team to San Antonio.
But, he also did keep the team in New Orleans and got the Pelicans here as well.
I was much more sad about his death than I thought I’d be, mostly looking back at going to Saints games with my dad as a kid, and if not for Benson keeping the team here, I wouldn’t have had that. So for that, I’m grateful

Drew Brees had every intention of wanting to play in Miami for Nick Saban.

Incredibly sad news yesterday to hear of the passing of Mr Benson. Mr Benson has meant so much to this city & to my career in NOLA. Mr B & his wife Gayle treated me like family since I arrived & I'm forever indebted to them for their kindness & generosity. He will be missed! #RIP

After Katrina he basically held the state hostage over the Superdome or he was moving the team to San Antonio

I respect him more for what he's done for the city ie The Benson Cancer Center At Ochsner. My mother has used this facility as have numerous others. What generous contribution and they are fixing to expand it. I didn't appreciate his attitude after Katrina but Paul Tagliabue made things right. Tom Benson's good outweighed his bad. If only we ALL could say the same about ourselves. RIP Tom.

If you were a prudent businessman with extensive roots in San Antonio in Benson’s situation in September 2005, you’d have done the same thing.
No one knew for months after Katrina if the population of New Orleans was going to return to a point that would be able to economically sustain an NFL franchise.
There was no precedent for Katrina (and Rita’s) impact on populations and the economic fallout from the storms.
The value of the Saints franchise in 2005 was a majority percentage of Benson’s wealth, he had to look to protect his investment.
As a Saints fan since 1970, it hurt me emotionally but logically I understood his rationale.
I bought two season tickets the first day they went on sale in 2006 to, in a tiny way, support Benson as he was being forced to keep the team in NOLA by the league.m
I still have them.
Obviously, over the past decade-plus with a Season Ticket waiting list, the Saints don’t need my miniscule “help”, but in ‘06 the issue was still in doubt.
RIP Mr Benson, in my humble opinion, he did as good as he could have been expected to do.
