Why Do Pro Athletes Spit so Much?

Pro athletes of outdoor sports - baseball, football, soccer, etc. - why do they spit on the ground so much? Do they think it's cool? They must. Is it just a habit they all have, to try to be like everyone else? Probably. I'm not talking about people who dip tobacco or have sunflower seeds or whatever - at least they have a reason to spit. I'm talking about people who continuously spit their saliva. I mean, it's the same ground they and their teammates will be sliding on. It's a little disgusting, and there's no reason for it.
Before anyone says it, no, pro athletes do not make more saliva than average people. Even if they did, they wouldn't make more than pro athletes of indoor sports (e.g., basketball), who somehow manage to go entire games without spitting on the ground. If anything, continuously spitting your saliva would probably make your mouth dry.
Anyways, just a pet peeve of mine.
Lots of jokes to be made, I'm sure. Go ahead.

I have no clue, but the grossest fricking thing is a hockey bench after the game. F'in spit spots every where.
Have been able to skate on ice after a blues game several times(aunt has a connection), and no one would even try to get pictures on the bench, the spit marks were on every inch of the bench.
gross as hell

Have you ever run or anything?
Your saliva becomes super viscous if you don't drink so the next option is to spit it out

I think it’s a combination of things. Sweat/salt getting in the mouth causing cotton mouth. Saliva can build up when wearing a mouthpiece, so football players are likely to spit after they take it out. Baseball players is mostly tobacco and sunflower seeds.

Saliva builds up when you exert yourself if you aren't drinking anything.

It happen much more in colder weather, maybe that is why you don't see it much in basketball as the temperatures are more regulated. I know when I am running in cold weather it really hits me.
What is really gross is swimmers, they spit in the pool all the time and then continue to swim in it. Then again that's probably not nearly as bad as other things they do in the pool.

It's more of a habit than anything.
I played baseball and basketball. I never spit during daily life. I never spit on the basketball court. But the second I got on a baseball field I'd just start spitting without even realizing it.
I don't know how it started or why the habit started.

Just in my personal experience, I get really snotty when I run. Whether that's coming from my lungs, or my sinus's. I just get snotty. So I gotsta spit.

14 year old boys love to spit.
Most pro athletes are at about that level

Have you ever gotten your heart rate up? I probably spit every time I jog outside. Your saliva certainly changes consistency and creates the urge to spit.
If I were jogging indoors, I wouldn’t spit, because I’m not a degenerate.

Baseball dugouts are filthy - at every level.
Biggest slobs who never heard of a trash can. If you're gonna dip in the dugout use a spitoon or Mudjug or a paper cup for sunflower seeds or just some random bucket.
When ballboys handed Jordan a cup of Gatorade, did you see him just chuck the cup on the court when he was done?
