To me it's easier to spit out an arse load of spit mid-activity than it is to try to swallow my own spit while exerting myself.

Over time it builds into a habit. Not much to it, but no most don't start it to "look cool".

You ever run for a significant amount of time? You end up dislodging a lot of phlegm from your throat that has to go away if you want to keep your breathing regular.

Your saliva becomes super viscous if you don't drink so the next option is to spit it out

Not really. Poor excuse. No one in the gym spits while running on the treadmill or elliptical, and they're exerting themselves more than a lot of athletes.

And it's not like there's that much running between drink breaks in baseball and football - maybe just a couple sprints or so. Even soccer. Sure, they run off and on for 45 minutes at a time, but it's only ~3 miles during that time. I jog that far in 30 minutes and never have to spit at all.

No it doesn't.

And why would pro athletes not be drinking anything?

Yes, because treadmills are outdoors...

A lot of people in this thread are talking out of their arse. Most of the spitting is just a habit. Baseball players spit when they are just standing around in the field or chilling in the dugout.

It’s just a habit.
