They’re found in everything from hair dryers to Apple’s AAPL, -0.67% iPads. But lithium-ion batteries shouldn’t be loaded into the cargo hold of planes. A plane full of passengers traveling from Salt Lake City, Utah to Bozeman, Mont. on Delta Air Lines DAL, +0.38% discovered this in dramatic fashion on Monday. A member of the cabin crew brought a burned toiletry bag that contained lithium battery to show the passengers just how dangerous putting them in cargo can be. One passenger tweeted photos of the melted toiletry bag. “Kudos to @Delta ground crew in Salt Lake for saving the day (and us),” Karia Rouda, an author of novels, “Best Day Ever” and “The Goodbye Year.” They smelled fire in cargo - unloaded bags and discovered this. If we had taken off ... #Thankful As the pilot said, we owe them.”

Thanks for tipping off the terrorists.

What happened to make it catch fire?

I'm pretty thousands of electronic devices are stored in overhead compartments. If we freaked out this much when the first car was in an accident, we would all be walking everywhere.

I think that flight attendant works security at L'Auberge...

Kudos to the ground crew for spotting this before takeoff

you realize this has nothing to do with the plane right?

Guess we can't bring our phones on planes either?

Is one of the bright OTers here going to explain why these batteries are catchign fire/exploding, since the article did not?

So that happened in checked baggage and he brought it on the plane to show people? Carryon is safe right? Planning to bring my laptop as a carry on on a flight this afternoon. Don’t want to crash plane. TIA.

You're welcome.

You can't put lithium batteries in your CHECKED luggage.
Phones, tablets, laptops, even your vape, bruh, are fine in the pressurized cabin. It's because the batteries can explode. If they're in the cargo hold and no one knows it exploded, it can be dangerous.

Yes I know.
I was being facetious.

Well, yeah, if you simplify it.

Lithium batteries have lots of points of instability. Too much charge, not charged enough, charged too fast and discharged too fast all can be fire hazards. These points are usually controlled by electronics, but they do fail on occasion.
