Tipping for drinks at dinner

When you sit at a bar, tipping $1 for a drink is kind of the standard.
So, if you're having dinner, and say, a couple bottles of wine among four people. Each bottle provides about six glasses for a total of twelve glasses. So, that would be a $12 tip.
But what if the bottles are $85 each? A 20% tip would be $34. If they are $120 bottles, a 20% tip would be $48.
So, do you tip on the "per drink" standard, or the total of the wine bill. The server does no more or no less than would be done sitting at the bar.

If Im having dinner I tip on the food, not the alcohol

If you can't afford to tip, don't go out to eat or drink, simple as that. Bring on the downvotes.

You don't tip on the booze at a table. The server does no extra work whether I order a $20 bottle or a $200 bottle. $1-2/ drink if you order at the bar.

If you have to ask you don't need to patronize places you can't afford to tip at junior.

Yes, the percentage based tip can get a bit out of whack when ordering expensive bottles of wine... but I still just tip based on a percentage rather than figure out a percentage of the food and then however many dollars per servings of wine.

I realize tipping is a chore, but the amount of effort that goes into avoiding a standard 18-20% tip is ridiculous

On the tip line I usually write "here's a tip, get a real job"

Im not giving a waiter $60 to open a $300 of wine for me...now if he recommended it and I really like it....then I will tip him, but it's going to be 20%

The s at the end of the word bottle means that it is plural.
Sorry, that means there are multiple
Sorry, that means more than one

standard is 15%.
20% is for really good service
25% for exceptional
the scale slides based on how well they do...rarely do they get less than 15%, gotta be a frickup on the level of Polly74

They also do no extra work whether you ordered a hot dog or a filet mignon sooooo

tip at least 18-20% on total bill. it's easier that way and the server probably has to pay a certain percentage to the bar and bus staff based on their total sales.
