Time to rethink the 40 hour work week

As the article mentions, the 40 hour work week was a response to having no regulation and workers consistently putting in 16 hour days. That was back in the early 1900s. I feel like the increase in technology and the way everything is mostly computerized that a lot of jobs can be done from home with certain exceptions (healthcare, field construction, etc.)
I feel like you are often paid mostly to just be physically present than actual work needing to be done. I've had a variety of jobs and with the exception of certain really busy days, there is often a severe shortage of things to do for a full 8 hours every day. Anyone else feel the same?

As an SysAdm/Helpdesk guy, I could easily do my job from home with the exception of the few helpdesk tickets I get a year that cannot be resolved remotely.

Many will come in bragging about how their life is perfect and they don’t work nearly 40 hours but you’re absolutely right. Companies should offer an option for a 10% salary cut if you would like to work from home. With all of the production metrics available these days it would not be an issue. The company would save money and you would have a much happier employee.

That would be up to negotiations, but if you do the same work and everything gets done on time with no issues I don't see why you'd have to take a huge cut just because you didn't show up to an office every day.

That would kind of go along with my theory that you are paid just to be physically present than for the work you actually do if you would be required to take a huge cut to work from home.

Why should the employee have to take a 10 percent pay cut to be more productive and happier by working from home? I say this as someone who has held on-site and work from home jobs, and I can affirm that I'm way more productive working from home. I'm "on" the whole time I'm working, versus an on-site job where I'd pull the Office Space staring at my computer trick and space out for hours.

Same here. I work from home occasionally and get cabin fever. There's no way I could function working from home full-time.

I don't have enough hours in the week.
If you value working from home, go find a job that allows you to work from home. If you value maximizing your productivity and/or positioning yourself to make the most money as you can either short term or long term, you might choose to work more hours.
The last thing we need is the government deciding that a 40 hour work work is too long. Workers and Employers should determine that.
