Honeymoon travel to Italy

We are planning our honeymoon for October this year. Flying from New Orleans to Rome roundtrip is pretty expensive unless there is a pop-up sale.
I've been playing around with Google Flights and plugging in scenarios. What are y'all thoughts on this scenario? Book JFK-Rome roundtrip now since there is a low price ($859 rt total for 2 people). Then book MSY to JFK roundtrip later when I can catch the prices drop.
MSY to JFK. 7am direct flight landing at 11am
JFK to Rome. 4:25pm direct flight landing at 6:50am next day
Rome to JFK. 10:40am direct flight landing at 2:15pm
JFK to MSY. 7:45pm direct flight landing home at 10:45pm
Is it a bad idea to book these two flights separately? It would save us almost $400 per person. And we could book the international leg first, then look for deals on the MSY to JFK flight over the next few months.
I know we'll need to get our backs from baggage claim after the first and go through security at JFK to check-in for the international flight.
I'm open to ALL suggestions.

I've done it before. Its not my preference but it can save money.

Are you only going to be in Rome? My suggestion would be to fly into Venice or Milan and work your way down to Rome if you have enough time.
Are you into wine? What do you know about Italian food?
The food in northern Italy is not at all like what you get at an Italian restaurant in America. Northern Italian food is probably my favorite food type in the world. Wild boar and duck sauces, sage ravioli and very little use of the tomato unlike Sicily and American style Italian food.

For October, I would not book now for $859 out of JFK. That's basically the average or above average rate from there plus $200-300 round trip to get to there and back. You are more likely to save more money on the international flight then the domestic flight, just because of the price you have more room to drop.
You could easily find a better deal somewhere else outside of JFK. Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, etc.
Set some flight trackers. As said set them Venice and Milan also. Chances are they will come down.
ETA: There's really no reason to book airfare outside of 90 days unless you get a great fare. The airlines are not even worried about Summer yet for the most part, they are still marketing Spring. I wouldn't sweat booking October until June at the earliest.

When I flew back from Rome, the cheapest route was to fly Rome to Toronto to MSY.
We decided to spend the night in Toronto & flew nonstop to MSY the next afternoon, for the same price.

I did exactly what you are doing.
I got the round trip tickets from JFK to Rome, then bought round trip tickets from NO to JFK (JetBlue).
All said and done, the total was $1600 for everything (including a flight from Venice to Rome during the return).

My wife and I just booked our tickets for our honeymoon in Italy this summer. British Airways, MSY>LHR>Rome, short layover in London. I rather pay the extra for Premium Econony for more leg room and we have our own 2 seat row. I think regular economy was around $1800. The direct from MSY to LHR is awesome as well.
Best time to book is like 40-60 days in advance. We booked ours about 60 days.

This route—MSY to LHR to FCO—was by far the cheapest for my early Feb trip. For some reason, the cheapest British Air flights don’t come up in Google Flights. So check BA directly.
I won’t book two sep tickets when flying internationally. Too many potential delays, weather issues, etc. if you miss that connection, the airline isn’t obliged to get you home. No thanks.

I found round trip flights from NW Ark to Rome for $450 last year. Had to go through Minneapolis but didn’t care. Atlanta on the way back. Would recommend Lucca and Cinque Terra (air bnb) as side trip.

We found the flights on Kayak, not google flights. BA website gives me a headache.
Not sure what the downvotes are for, can’t agree with you more. Less layovers on international flights is worth the extra money.

I wouldn't separate the flights if possible. You would likely have to go get your bags and recheck them if you do. If you plan to only have carry-on bags it wouldn't be a problem. That's what my wife and I did. Stayed 9 nights with just one carry-on each. Had to find a laundromat in Rome about mid-stay, but is easily doable.

Every time I fly to Europe I fly out of JFK. I also plan my trip so I can spend the day in NY and fly out late night. I’m in Nashville so a southwest flight to New York is nothing. I’m also usually buying one way flights to Europe since I’m flying into a different city than the one I will be leaving from. Last time I went I bought flights and it only cost me $800.

We're also looking to be in Italy in October (not a honeymoon, just a trip) and are going to be all over the map. I believe Florence, Modena, Venice, and Rome.
I've only been to Rome so looking forward to it. But this entire trip is being planned around Modena.

Are you taking European delivery of a new 488?
We went to Italy in October this past year. The weather was warm enough to swim in Positano and Capri.
OP, MSY>NYC have been high lately. I used to get $200-$350 flights, now they are $350-$500. Summer is the cheapest, spring and fall are the most expensive. I wouldn’t count on getting a cheap flight especially looking at a specific date and time.

Yup.
Not counting my chickens though, because it's really difficult to get a reservation and they don't open up bookings for October until July, so we'll just have to wait and see if/when we get in to book the rest of the trip.

Better to just do complete individual legs.
However, a multi-city flight may be the best bet.
Fly in to Rome and fly out of Venice.
Or vice versa.
And let the services price it out for you.
It should run you somewhere between $1200-$1400 total.
There is currently this flight for $1100:
MSY -> IAD -> IST -> FCO 18hrs
VCE -> IST -> IAH -> MSY 20hrs
Or this one for $1200:
MSY -> IAD -> FCO 13hrs
VCE -> MUC -> IAD -> MSY 16hrs

If you have a premium credit card with a concierge service like Amex Platinum, don’t forget to try booking through them.

Set up with Scotts cheap flights and wait. There will be a sub 500 round trip basically every month to Italy, and should leave NO or Houston each time. When that pops, book it.
I'm flying back from Rome Friday into Charlotte and my flight is 430 round trip
