Oklahoma teachers planning statewide strike

More than 25,000 people have joined the Facebook group “Oklahoma Teacher Walkout – The Time Is Now!” and a group of educators met Friday to discuss plans for the walkout, according to Tulsa’s KTUL.
“We are to the point where we have no other option,” one teacher told KTUL.
The teachers are frustrated with lawmakers’ lack of action on increasing teacher salaries. The state’s teachers are reportedly some of the lowest-paid in the nation, according to KTUL.

The proposed strike would come soon after a West Virginia teachers’ strike that has continued for seven days. Schools in 55 of the state’s counties remained closed on Friday, even though the teachers’ union had reached a deal with West Virginia Governor Jim Justice (R).
The Oklahoma teachers are considering striking during the first week of April, during standardized state testing. LINK

A lot of OK teachers have crossed the southern border to make more money... including their state "teacher of the year" recently.
When Texas public schools pay that much more, you know there's a problem.

Oklahoma's school system is a wreck

Shut down the school system?!! Oh no, what shall we do without the free babysitting?! THE ECONOMY might collapse if moms have to stay with their kids for a few days.
Won’t someone think of THE ECONOMY?

Isn't starting pay something completely asinine like 30K a year?
My wife's district starts at 50K in the Houston area.

Yeah it's a complete joke
Tulsa public schools are complete arse and union schools are so much better.
I can't wait until a true conservative replaces failin on another note

That's the underlying problem with public education. It's one of the easiest degrees to get at any university and because of that there are too many "qualified" teachers which keeps wages low.
Teaching should be a high wage career and becoming a teacher should me MUCH harder.

Yes, around 30k. We don't pay them shite here. It's pretty sad. I graduated with two ladies who are school teachers in my immediate area, and was friends with three more in the area during my school days. They are all (or were) married to guys with secure oil jobs. If not for that, they could literally not continue to be teachers.
They can make more in Oklahoma as a department manager at Wal-Mart. It's been a sad state of affairs for teachers here since I was still in high school in the 90s.

My sister-in-law, a public school teacher for over 20 yrs, finally left OK last year. She is getting paid much better here in TN.

Until teachers stop considering themselves to ALL be doing the "same" job.......this will never get solved.
Differential pay is the solution, but their unions would shite bricks

Biggest problem is you have to pay all teachers the same rate and wage increases are based solely on years worked instead of job performance, because "fairness." Teachers Unions created this nightmare, and now they want to play the victim (shocker).
Areas where there is higher demand for teachers but low supply of willing applicants, like science, math, special education fields, should be able to start those positions at a higher rate. People who put in the time to go into those fields have options outside of school systems, and even the highest starting teacher salaries in the country don't always compete with those options.
Instead, those positions are paid the same as the very low demand teaching positions with high supply, like gym, English, History, foreign language of any kind, music, or art. Unless they're extremely lucky, most people have very few options other than teaching when it comes to those fields. They were stupid to go into them in the first place, and clearly didn't look at the job outlook before deciding on those majors. Those high-supply teaching positions should be getting paid less simply based on supply and demand, but that can't happen. 30k sounds extremely fair to me for a position that has such a high surplus of available teachers.
TLDR: We should be putting an effort into encouraging people to seek out math, science, and other in-demand teaching positions by paying those positions more competitive wages to draw them into teaching, and we should not tie all teaching salaries to what we should pay those positions of need.

If you set the wages to a reasonable level, it will attract more talent and districts can be more choosy.
But I hear what you're saying. One of the reasons teaching certificates are 'easy' is the need for more teachers... due to low pay.

I haven't seen anyone mention the administrative expenses.
We spend just as much as anyone else per student and we can't pay our teachers? Where does the money go? Administrative positions and their bloated salaries.

So they chose the wrong degree to make money. Tough shite. Learn to adapt. I did when I got laid off twice.
Sometimes you have to be willing to move to make more money. I have no sympathy for any employee paid by the state, county, city or federal government. That includes my sister who is also a teacher.

As long as we insist on paying the art teacher the same thing we pay the Physics teacher........we'll have a fricked up system.

Depends on the school. A friend of mine got her first job (no MBA might I add) starting at 52k in Spring.
