It's closer to 10 months a year worked and not 8.

- 2.5 to 3 months off in the summer.

- Week or two for Christmas.

- Week for spring break.

- All other federal and state holidays.

School systems that do year round schooling have other breaks throughout the year built in to off-set not having a summer break.

Oklahoma's school system is a wreck

The schools here in Altus are the most depressing thing ive ever seen.

The school on base is light years ahead of the local school and is ranked on of the best in the state. Anymore with base access tries to get their kids in the elementary school.

Its so poor here, they don't want to close schools when the weather is bad bc so many local kids depend on the free lunch as their only meal of the day.

Especially where I'm at.

3/4 of the town looks like nothing has been upgraded infrastructure wise since the 50s.

The housing in the area is down right sad.

Spent a summer at Ft Sill (Lawton), I think the BAH rate there was like 300 bucks!

Altus has the lowest BAH in the DoD for 2018

E-5 with dependents gets like $780

Ft Sill gets like $1100

Problem is the average house in Altus on the north side of town, which is actually safe. Rent is roughly $1400 a month. The other 3/4 in the hood about $500. Cost of living here is insane despite the avg income being so low.

SW Oklahoma is horrible. I've been there a time or two and its ugly, windy and depressing. As soon as you go west of I-35, the landscape is noticeably different.

The farm I keep in Oklahoma is in SE Oklahoma and it's at least reasonable. Close to Lake Texoma and easy to get to north Texas.

It is like a different world after driving 20 mins south into Texas. Well Vernon is pretty depressing but once past there it gets better.

You know SW OK is bad when Wichita Falls looks nice.

Wife is a High School English Teacher. By the school calendar, she gets 2.25 months off for Summer.

However, during that time she has to travel to a week long Conference for Advance Placement. She then has another week of meetings with her entire department mostly scheduled in early July.

She then has to spend the last 2 weeks of her "Summer Vacation" prepping her classroom, buying the supplies she will need to teach the kids, and writing lesson plans. Those are just the requirements she has to meet.

That doesn't include her duties as a cheer coach during the summer. Truth be told, she may get two weeks scattered through those 2 months.

One of the reasons teaching certificates are 'easy' is the need for more teachers... due to low pay.

Eh. That’s circular. There’s not really a “need for more teachers.” Principals rountinely get 200-300 apps for teaching positions in the STL area.

A good teacher is probably worth between $80,000-$110,000 depending on subject matter etc.

A bad teacher is worth $30,000.

Oddly enough, the good get paid the same as the bad.

If she “has” to be doing it, it’s part of her Collective Barganining Agreement. If it’s not part of her CBA, she doesn’t “have” to do it.

And we’re back to the difference between good teachers and bad and a lack of pay differential between them.

Referred to as unionism. I know. I was private union for 42 years and you're right. The lazy shits made as much as us energetic shits.

You can use education level, but how else would you determine the difference between a good teacher in a bad school, and a bad teacher in a good school? The results these teachers produce would not be able to be compared accurately
