I'm more comfortable w a 19 year old trained marine handling a gun over just a random 40 year old (who may or may not have any experience/training).

So if we provide weapons training to all, we could scale back gun laws?

Make everything 21 across the board. Voting, draft, enlistment, drinking, gambling, etc. Kids are too dumb these days.

Probably has some merit. The founding fathers had no idea they would be eating detergent.

They don’t typically stay there they’re entire career.

Nearly every person at the pentagon started out in the “regular” Army and had to meet the standard in order to go to the Pentagon.

If you're not mature enough to buy yourself a beer, then you also aren't mature enough to vote, buy a gun, enlist, or get the death penalty.

I'm open to discussing moving the drinking age down instead of moving the age for those other activities up, but the double standard is retarded.

as well as not being able to sign a legal document like an apt. lease, buying a car, getting married, and voting, if can't be trusted, you can't be trusted.

I don't get why age is even an issue. The average age of mass shooters since 1982 is 34. The youngest being 11, the oldest was 66, I believe.

At 18, kids are considered adults, weather they are ready for it or not. They are forced to sign up for selective service. They are considered capable of voting. They join the military and defend the country.
Why should rights be granted selectively?
Apply this to freedom of religion, and see how long that debate lasts...

As long as there are laws witholding rights from anyone until age 21, then registering for selective services shouldn’t be required til 21. Enlistment is a different issue. Keep it at 18.

Why is "21" the age? I actually support kids not being able to buy an AR-15 until 21.... because it's about people being older and more mature before handling a machine made only for killing human life.

But I've always wondered why 21 is the age chosen. Are their scientific studies about human maturity that suggest 21 is an inflection point?

Is 84 the average lifespan, and therefore 21 is 1/4 of the span of an average life?

Why not 20, 22, 23, any other number? Maybe someone can enlighten me.

good question.

21 was the first age for the selective service act. It was also the first age for voting. It seems we accepted 18 as adulthood in 1940 when we decreased the draft age to increase our forces for WW2. The voting age reduced in 1971 in response to the draft and kids being sent to fight a war for which they had no say in government.

ETA: I realize i didnt answer your question, just that 21 has been selected as the age for quite some time.

In the military, use of firearms is strictly controlled. First, the weapon that is issued and that soldiers are trained to use remain in the unit arms room and ammunition is stored separately. Weapons can only be signed out for training activities (or work if you are an MP) and must be signed back in once training is completed.

Ammunition is also strictly accounted for. Unused ammo must be turned back in, and the brass must be collected from expended rounds at firing ranges and weighed to ensure no major theft has occurred.

All privately owned weapons must be registered and kept at your residence (if you have a house or apartment) or in the unit arms room if you live in the barracks.

Anytime you transport your personal weapon, you have to have the registration form with you.

Lots of gun control in the military

I've seen the same baws for 8 years followed by transition jobs into contractor and gov positions with nearly identical roles.

Yep.

"Doing something" is better to a progressive than doing something effective.

Raising the age is a political answer to a real world problem. It's just to appease the low minded.
