Agreed.
Hopefully this is political suicide for those two as well. Any former police chief that calls the AR15 an assault rifle is a political pawn.

he should ban handguns too since that's the majority of the new orleanian criminals weapon of choice.

Landry knows it won't have a prayer but he is trying for the narrative "not needed for hunting." Thats the worrying part.

Moreno is a Dem from New Orleans. Politicking for AR ban won't hurt her at all. Landry is a Dem from New Iberia...not sure of the local politics over there as to whether he'll lose votes over there.

How many OBers will support this because a police guy does...just like many don't support constitutional carry for the same reason.

"Assault rifles aren't for hunting," Landry said. "They're made for killing. They're killing machines."
As is all firearms, knives, swords, spears, arrows, etc... And who are you to tell me what my legally purchased firearm is to be used for when it falls within the LDWF regulations for caliber?
quote:
He said his concern is also for fellow officers.
"Why would we want them outgunned?" he said.
1) I believe they have surplus military equipment, along with those same AR's that you want banned.
2) Having the same weapon does not make them "outgunned"
3) "Outgunned" is pretty subjective. One could argue that having a 300wm with a 16x scope would be "outgunning" someone with an AR and redot
4) I believe this was the actual basis and intent of the Second Amendment, no? Wasn't it for the people to have the ability to defend itself from tyranny, other potential wrong doers, and invasive governments?
quote:
"Do we want to wait until somethign (sic) happens at one of our schools or fairs or churches?"
If banning murder doesn't stop murder, do you honestly believe that banning a very particular firearm will?
quote:
"I want to make our community and our state safer."
Maybe start by cleaning up the streets and actually prosecuting and imprisoning the criminals?
I leave you with this quote relating to "assault weapons" bans
quote:
Others say that further restrictions on AR-15-style rifles won’t help curb gun violence because handguns are used in the vast majority of gun crimes.
“Little wonder then that a 2004 study commissioned by the Department of Justice found that the federal ban [on assault rifles] didn’t lead to any decrease in gun crime or gun deaths. For starters, rifles, assault or otherwise, are rarely used in gun crime,” Adam Winkler, a constitutional law professor at UCLA Law School, wrote in a 2015 Los Angeles Times op-ed.
Gun crime in the U.S. is “overwhelmingly handgun crime,” he wrote.
Gunmen in other high-profile mass shootings used handguns, including the Charleston church and Fort Lauderdale airport shootings.
Which kinda begs the question, are our police "outgunned" by all these handguns?

When you start getting a former cop or current cop like him voicing his "concerns" people will start believing him just because of his badge. I'd love for a cop like that to tell me why I can't have a 17 round glock magazine to defend myself against the same people his officers have to arrest while they carry "high capacity" magazines.
Then again for a decade and in some states still with assault bans a retired cop can keep his "high capacity" magazines plus assault weapon. Learned that on a cop board years ago.

Some may not know this, but once these so called ''assault rifles'' are off the market our beloved hunting rifles will be next.

Wait till they find out what a .45 Acp,. 357 sig, .357 magnum, 41 mag, 44 mag does to their vests then they'll be complaining about "armor piercing handguns."

Three questions for this guy:
1. What areas of Louisiana have the highest rates of gun-related homicide?
2. Of those areas, how many instances in the past ten years was an "assault rifle" the weapon used?
3. Of those instances where an "assault rifle" was used, how many were legally acquired by the perpetrator?

Mr. Landry should worry about the 14 people shot in his hometown of New Iberia since January 1, and the 10 that were killed last year. Coincidentally they were not killed with AR 15’s

Yes nothing has been submitted. Just wanted OB to be aware. Sometimes this crap seems like it has no chance and then something happens and it gains traction. I will be contacting my legislators when it does get written just to make sure.
