Why people or should I say pussies down voted you? Guess self defense should not be used. to them.
Grandson is 7 and taking the same. Loves to spar. Yes, he had his arse put down a few times, but as a champ, he gets back up. He knows better to not go there at school, but only self defense.

Damn right. If you’re not teaching your kid how to defend himself in today’s day and age you’re setting him up for failure. My kid doesn’t start fights, but he’s not gonna be bullied. He plays football, baseball, and basketball too and these kids fall down or get a little bump or bruise and they start crying. You can tell right away the kids who are going to get picked on when they’re older because they’re not being toughened up while theyre young.

A lot of pussies on the OT who think fighting is “trashy” or whatever. There’s a difference between fighting and self-defense, and my kid knows how to defend himself. Teaching a kid to “just walk away” or “ignore it” is great but it doesn’t always work. Funniest part is that the ones downvotibg are the same ones who talk trash behind the screen of anonymity — they are the ones who were bullied when they were younger, no doubt.

Tried to get my big into it, but there aren't any gyms here on the Northshore. At least I couldn't find any a couple years ago when I looked.

I boxed in high school. We sparred on Thursdays every week. I can give a few good pieces of advice and explanations.
1. Don't let him spar non gym members off the street. We would monthly get college age kids or street tough dudes walk in and talk shite. They would generally get an arse kicking, which was fun, but now a days I'd be worried about people coming back with guns and stuff.
2. I probably would not let my kid spar every week. The more you hear about sparring, the more I ththijnk every other week is fine unless you have a fight coming.
3. Stress what sparring is. I know I had a different mind set when I was young and just starting. I egged the trainers eye one time and he taught me a lesson about how to spar the next two rounds by beating the shite out of me. I learned quick how to match the intensity and learn rather than fight.
4. Be there. Looking back, I got headaches my first couple months. I should have had guidance on scaling back and monitoring it. I got knocked out cold spar session 3, took 3 min. And sparred more. I eventually got where you couldn't knock me out cold, but if I got dropped, back in the day, they wouldn't even count. It was practice time to get knocked down, grabbed and helped up, and the trainer would yell, get through it, move, get back in it. I think now a days thats probably frowned upon, but if you get rocked, that should be the end of the night.

If there where more fights on the playground after school. There would be fewer shootings in the classrooms. Btw my son is 10 years old and has 2yrs in bjj
He'll be fighting in his 7th tournament next month.

I have two nephews and our family is not into boxing at all but they play organized football, baseball, and basketball and they will both know how to fight (defensively not offensively). I salute you OP ,your son is not a sissy and he won’t be a bully victim either. Also Brazos, ignore the OT snobs and wannna be OT aristocrats.

Why would you consciously make your kid stupider than he already is? NM he'll fit right in to the Poli Board in 2 years.

Back in the early ‘80s at Holy Cross they held a random boxing tournament. A ring was set up in the gym, and if you had a beef with someone you could go a few rounds with them. There were some awesome fights. Can’t imagine this being allowed at any school in today’s world, but it was great.

Yes there are. I can recommend a great one for youngsters. I am truly hoping wrestling makes a comeback. The numbers are starting to rise in high school.
Great sport

I boxed my preteen and teenage years. As a kid who had somewhat of an anger problem it definitely helped.

Which one do you recommend? My son is interested. I think the one we were looking at is called All Star Wrestling Club?
