What was campus like when Shaq was here?

I'm watching a Shaq mixtape right now and they just showed a few clips of the PMAC going crazy when he was at LSU. Looks like it was pretty damn rowdy.

Did LSU and the students/fans realize what they were watching at the time? Anyone have stories of partying with Shaq in Tigerland or anything like that? I would have loved to experience having a dominant force and one-in-a-lifetime talent like that to cheer for.

Saw him rapping at the old Bengal on Highland Road one night.

That's all I got.

There was a recent history of winning. Dale was going to the NCAA tournament for at least ten years before Shaq. It takes some time to build a group of fanatics like Duke has. If Wade keeps winning the PMAC will be a madhouse in two years.

There was a culture of supporting basketball at the time so it wasn't a situation where people started going just bc of Shaq.

Basketball games were more exciting than football at the time and there was a buzz outside the PMAC for most every game which i havent seen more than a handful of times in the 25 years since. frick i'm getting old.

Crazy, shaq would slay strange in the quad while crowds would chant him on.

I partied with Geert Hammink, Shaq’s backup, many times at Sports.

One of Misha Mutavic’s chubby gfs and her friend drove me home from a bar one night and “raped” me. She told me if I told anyone that she would have me beaten up by her bf and the rest of the basketball team. #metoo #collegerapeculture #ilikedit

They sold it out for the Bama game this year. Mind you it was 2 unranked teams.

People sell LSU fans short. We show up but just give us a damn reason to. I will do a permanent ban bet that there are over 10k at the PMAC opening tip in ‘18. I’ll be there to watch Waters, Naz, Days, Sampson, Mays, Williams and Smart.

Hell we go 10K deep for gymnastic meets.

Biggest mistake LSU is making is selling the pushing the students into a corner and giving them shitty seating and putting a bunch of old fat guys courtside. Another money grab that’s going to ultimately hurt the product.

I was able to sit in the student section during Shaq's time at LSU, it was the entire 2 lower sections on the side of the court. A group I would always sit with would have at least one member line up early to get our seats behind the railing separating the lower section from the second level of seats. The student section would always fill up, and the rest of the seats would usually be fairly full.

I remember there being newspaper pages being passed among the student section to be held in front of our faces during introductions of opposing team members, and then thrown at members of the press, sitting along the sideline, when the Tigers line up was about to be introduced.

I was there to see Shaq cause a 20 minute delay in a game when he dunked so hard the support structure holding the backboard failed and the whole assembly had to be replaced. Watching warm ups while Shaq and his team mates where doing shoot arounds was entertaining because it always evolved into a slam dunk contest.

I remember the students harassing Kentucky's coach, Joe Hall, so effectively that he got red faced and flipped off the students.

I could go on for a while but these are just a few of my very found memories of the best years of LSU basketball.

Geert had hotter babes around him than Shaq believe or not.

I usually take the position that one watching on TV should not really be in a position to criticize fans actually attending a sporting event. But watching that supposedly packed Bama game earlier this year, and seeing all those old fricks literally just sitting on their hands, sitting on their asses like they were watching a freaking play, right there in the main frame of the camera pretty much the entire time, and during every exciting moment of that game, was just excruciating.

I always liked Geert. Does anyone remember his son Shane played here I think for a season or two then transferred to Valparaiso? He plays professionally now for a team in Spain LINK

There were stately oaks and broad magnolias. And I was watching Chris Jackson more than Shaq at the time they were there together.

Shaq was awesome though. Fun to watch. Skinny fricker back then. It was frustrating once teams realized he couldn't shoot FTs. Hack a Shaq began.

I remember sitting in the JD office waiting for a meeting and Shaq walked in with Stanley Roberts. I had no clue at the time who either was. Dear God what some monster humans, especially Roberts.

I wish LSU would wake up about this. Do they not watch other schools' games to see how much better the environment is when the the students are courtside? It would make the PMAC a more hostile environment and provide a better fan experience. And the team will feed off it. Screw the few dollars LSU would lose.

It seems that Will Wade is trying to change the culture at LSU. Hopefully, he is in LSU 's ear about this for next season.

It was like the Cameron Crazies - students camped out for games once CJ came on scene.

Once CJ went off for 50 you couldn't get a seat through the Shaq era.

absolutely we knew that shaq was great and dominant. we knew dale wasn't the greatest coach ever but that's what you have a staff for. shaq had a great supporting cast too with vernell, stanley roberts, etc. it was really super disappointing to not make it further in the tourney but dale's teams could be like that.

true story. we were at the a&m football game, first game of the season, and shaq had just recently committed to lsu. a&m runs the opening kickoff back for a td. my friend and i look at each other and start yelling "shaq, shaq, shaq". just college kids being stupid.

i remember walking past shaq in the quad. my eyes were about the same height as his abdomen.

also, the rumors are true. we camped out for games. sometimes a week and i'm not exaggerating. one sat we played a team and at halftime, we left to get in line for the duke game 7 days later. there was a system where someone from your group had to be present at all times. the ath dept would send someone to go down the list. our group rotated so that we could make classes. dale was so impressed he got permission for facilities to run power cords to the pmac ramp where everyone was camping. the pmac ramp was a scene. people had tv's, refrigerators, sleeping bags, etc. it was a week long party. eventually, we were moved into the pmac concourse to camp for games. one of my best college memories.

I remember many empty seats in the fall of '86 - just after our final four. Middle of the week game, early in the season. I didn't even realize that games were free for students (thanks, Robbie).

I also remember Shaq at Louie's. He didn't want to pay. It was sort of funny. He didn't know Bertram (manager at Louie's).

I also remember the fanaticism that arose with CJ. The Reveille and campus were abuzz.
