Just saw this report on TV

"you Americans are stupid fricks......but not you"

Where are you from? "Asia." While true, that accent pinpoints exactly where in Asia....

I mean.... he's not wrong. There was Stupidity involved. Poor old people are taken advantage of by these people. I bet if they had lines of communication to some of the "Shitholes" in their "Shithole" country, that they would be scamming asians/Indians/Arabs....etc. Americans are just fortunate of being so poor that they have fiberedge internet.

They mainly prey on older people period. Don't think it's just poor people though. Lots of older people don't have the same mental capacity they had when they were younger.

My parents are in their 80's. They haven't gotten any IRS calls, but the get calls every day from scammers saying they are with Microsoft, with their credit card company, with a company that can get their medical supplies free, etc. Neither of them has diabetes, but they get calls about getting those supplies free. They get a call every other week saying it's their grandson, stranded out of town needing money.

I think the people calling get a list of people on Medicare and just call them all. Someone sells that list to businesses that deal in medical supplies, and other things geared towards old people.

I wish we could give the death penalty to the person selling that list. If anyone deserves to burn in hell, they do. More than any drug dealer, or common thief. For the most part, old people die a little every day. They have enough problems without these folks bothering them.

There is a really good two part episode on the Reply All podcast about this.

The guy got a scam call but went along with it, even let them remote into his computer just to see what they would do. Eventually he called them out and got the scammer to be conversational. Long story short, they somehow got the scammer to agree to meet and they went to India to uncover how these scam centers work. It’s an awesome episode, highly highly recommend anyone into podcasts to go listen. The podcast is “Reply All” and it’s episodes #102 and #103.

It's not just scammer, big companies prey on the elderly.

I remember years ago, Charter had telemarketers preying on the elderly customers, telling thwm that if they didn't get the cable box, they would lose all the channels they watched.

At the time it was complete BS, it was still another 6-7 years of being able to just go from cable outlet, straight to tv for analog. BUt they wanted them to go to digital, so they lied.

Everybody should check out this guy on twitch named kitboga. Several nights a week he calls "Microsoft" because a pop up claims hackers have taken over his computer. Of course they are just scammers in India. He has lots of different characters and he sees how long he can keep them on the phone all while bringing awareness about these scams.

After my grandpa died, when my mom and her siblings were cleaning out his house, they saw that he had given a lot of money to these scams. They were all charity types, but in his mind he felt that he was able to help so he would agree to give money to all these different "charities" and scam type.

He just grew up in a different time.. The idea of someone running a scam just wasn't even a thought.. frick those jackasses. Americans are stupid? We are not the ones who work in sweatshops for $0.18/hr 14 hrs a day.

I read about a very interesting scam today on reddit. tl;dr Don't recite codes sent to your phone in text messages to someone who says they called you from your bank. Sounds obvious, but I can see how the guy fricked up.

My dad got this call last year, they even had my son’s name to go with it. Fortunately, he called me to ask how his grandson was doing....

These Indian scammers have their paws in every type of industry.

I advertised a large amount of round hay bales on a website that people I know have used with success. I get an email from someone saying he was currently working out of the US but wants to buy all of it. He says he will send a cashiers check for the full amount before he gets the hay. I said sure. He then says that he is going to send an extra $1500 for the haulers that will pick up the hay. He then informs me that due to delays, when I have his check in hand, I need to send $1500 to the hauler from my own bank account immediately. He claimed that since I would have his check in hand, it would be safe on my part. I called him out and he stopped messaging me.

Now 2 weeks later, different name and city but same scam and scenario. I'm actually playing along as far as I can just out of curiosity. I offered to deliver 200 bales to him in Kansas for free. He declined that offer saying he would rather use his own shippers. I'm running out of ideas though. Anytime I act suspicious he breaks off communication until I reassure him. His last message was about sending money to his haulers just like the last scammer. I asked for the haulers names and number along with his ID so I can go ahead and pay them but no reply.

They call my mom all the time too. However, I think the fact that it is mostly old people who won’t give up their land line factors into the equation as well. Most people’s cell number is either on a do not call list or harder to obtain.

So if you get a scam call, is it better to hang up or string them along and waste their time so they have less time to actually scam people? I've always just hung up but I think it would be fun to frick with them a bit.
