Day after All Star Game. Baseball not in high gear yet.

Jets found a chance to be the headline team in NYC for a few days and grabbed it, so of course it's "national" news.

No - but competent QBs are valued highly in the NFL.

I get that and understand average is unfortunately rare at the position.

That much money for a guy who's main qualification is "he's not shitty" is just nuts to me.

It's not just that he's competent. It's very rare for a QB that's worth a damn to hit the FA market. Usually starting caliber QBs keep getting re-signed until they

(A) Play their way out of any value they once had
(B) Get traded to someone desperatrre
(C) Retire as one of the best QBs for that team

And usually teams won't even trade for a big money QB unless they have an agreement on a long term deal set up in advance (i.e. Alex Smith). The QBs that have starting experience that actually hit the FA market are the ones that their original teams couldn't even get a 7th round pick for in a trade.

Unless of course you are the Redskins and just let him walk away and get nothing in return.

Part of it is him hitting the open market. It’s rare that an established, at least solid, starting NFL QB does that. And then you look at what Garropolo got too and the QB market is just not normal. You have to project some rather than paying off solely what he’s accomplished

This isn't a Saints/Falcons thing at all but a legitimate question. Do you think Ryan is elite enough to carry a franchise while making north of 30m? Feel like you'd have to kill it in the draft.

I'll say this about Ryan. Is he Rodgers or Brady? Absolutely not. He is a consistently very good QB who had an all timer of a season in 2016. His numbers in 2017 were skewed by an abnormally high number of drops that turned into INTs. Ryan's a smart, generally accurate passer and he has been incredibly durable so far in his career, only missing 2 starts. $30M is steep but if you're asking if I'd rather have Ryan at that price or roll the dice with a free agent/rookie, I'll take Ryan every time. Especially since the Falcons have an open Super Bowl window right now.

He was probably the most important draft hit in franchise history considering the Falcons were just coming off of the Vick dumbfrickery.

Out of all these places that need a QB: Denver, Arizona, Giants, Minnesota, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Cleveland, and the Jets, the Jets are by far the first team I wouldn't choose to go to. They're the first team I would eliminate. Their team stinks. If I'm Kirk Cousins, I would consider either Denver or Jacksonville and that's it. Depending on if Minnesota doesn't resign Keenum, I would consider them too. The Jets fricking blow.

no way in hell this was a plant to pay wayyyy more than they have to so they could get a headline for a day

i'm not buying this report, it just makes no sense for the team willing to pay whatever it takes to come out and say it

All this talk about how Kirk cousins is worth this and that. He's worth what someone is willing to pay him.

Supply and demand is the most basic principle of economics.

If jets give Washington the wink, Washington can tag Cousins, trade for a 2nd to jets where he’d play on 1 yr 34 mill deal. Jets can then get leg up on long term negotiations w him and guarantee a very good qb on roster immediately. Options w their first round pick.

When you take away Brady/Rivers/ben/brees who prob have 2-3 years each left then he’s top 5 potentially by 2020.
By this logic if you take away Minnesota, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New England the Saints would have won the Super Bowl

Decreasing the standards for a player who's led a team to only 1 PLAYOFF GAME during that starting tenure despite the fact the Redskins are arguably a better team than the Jets and play in a more winnable division, I hope the Jets do this the outcome will be SO HILARIOUS

Falcons better get Ryan's extension done before Cousins signs.

Tom Condon isn't letting any of his clients sign a contract until this Cousins deal is inked.

Likely what is holding up the Brees deal too.

I'd take Cousins over Mariota, Goff, Dalton, Flacco, Smith, Foles, Carr, and Goff right now. There's a lot of mediocre and TBD in that list. Cousins has proven it over the last several seasons.
