Every black person at work has been to see this movie. Black Panther is the Barak Obama of the movie world.

Why is this a bad thing?

There is nothing at all wrong with it. I never said there was. I’m just attributing things like that to why the returns are so high.

The movie features an entire, almost, untapped demographic in super hero movies and the numbers are showing the benefits of that.

Even w/o the entirety of the black audience that has been estimated to be around 34%ish of the take (normally tracks at 15% for Marvel movies) it would still have already made roughly $266 million. That would put it above Captain America: The Winter Soldier's entire domestic theatrical run of $259 million in just two weeks.

It's not just black people turning out higher than average that is driving the huge numbers. It's a hit to the point that it's going to hit $300 million in returns in all the other demos combined. To put in perspective how impressive it is the only other MCU solo series debut movies to go over $300m are Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man Homecoming.

here's how many days it took to surpass the domestic grosses of some recent superhero movies.

Justice League - 4
Logan - 4
Doctor Strange - 4
Thor: Ragnarok - 8
Spider-Man: Homecoming - 9
Deadpool - 9
Batman V Superman - 9
Suicide Squad - 9
GOTG Vol. 2 - 10

LINK

Of MCU movies it is already #10 all time

It's overall take has it at $709 million and by next Monday will have also passed the WW takes of CA:WS and GotG. W/China and Japan still to go and it opening wide in Russia today BP is going to end up well in the $800 million range. Maybe higher depending on it's legs.

I think it finishes between 1.2-1.3 billion. It's crazy seeing how low Winter Soldiers domestic BO run was. That's arguably the best MCU film.

Probably 30% of tickets bought for the movie were by people who maybe see 0-3 movies a year and don’t give a shite about Marvel films.

I saw it on opening night.

When the credits started rolling, individuals next to me start getting ready to leave.

They pause, look around in confusion, and mutter: what the hell? Why the frick isn’t anyone leaving?

A lot of white guilt money in those numbers

Why must I occasionally tolerate such nonsensical comments on this site? People are really enjoying that movie.
A lot of moviegoers are saying it's the best Marvel movie ever made.

" White guilt" won't produce the top box office three weeks in a row. Promise.

I admit it. You hooked me with that one, fth

But it’s not.

You are lying to yourself if you don’t think the characters and the setting had more to do with that conclusion than the actual story and cinematography for most (if not all) those who said it was the best.

Winter Soldier is a better film than this in ALL respects.

And you could argue Civil War as well.

I would put it on par with the first Iron Man and Thor.

Now that a meation it, some of the story arc similarities between this an Thor also kills some of the “revolutionary” elements.

Its not the best ever, but this movie was really good. This movie is doing so well because it is a perfect storm of being an above average popcorn flick, it is a comic book movie, and it has an extremely talented minority cast.
