It may be costlier in the long run since private sector logistic chains are more efficient.

Why not just pass a law restricting EBT purchases to non-crappy foods.

No soda ,no cookies, no candy

That may end up being the case; a cost analysis will tell the tale.
But this kind of creative thinking (e.g., “America’s Harvest Box”) is one of the reasons Trump was elected.
Business as usual is what’s kept the country from moving forward.

Idk how much an EBT is worth monthly but let’s say it’s $500. Assuming all the kinks can be worked out and costs aren’t more, What’s wrong with giving them $200 worth of staples twice per month and reducing the card to $100? So instead of them being able to buy $500 worth of bullshite, they can only buy $100.

Personally, I don’t give a shite as long as the $500 doesn’t go up. If u wanna spend it on twinkies & coke, knock yourself out. I don’t think this proposal is gonna have any affect on obesity rates like some are suggesting. That’s just silliness

I do wanna figure out how motherfrickers are driving $50k SUVs and have EBT cards though. That shite pisses me off lol

What???
It may be costlier - not a word???
It may cost more money to ship people food then a piece of plastic?
I see limitless potential in this program. Local growers helping people out with local fresh food. USPS not Neumening it ...
Or we can run the alternative - here’s 90$ go buy all the frozen pizza’s, Hungry Mans ya can. Once a month say eff it and do crab legs - rice and beans. Get Fatter and less employable.
Here’s a thought I give you bread, peanut butter, pasta, and a protein. You learn to cook. Hipsters forage the 5th food group.
45$ Less in MS13 hands from perjured cards

Theoretically, yes. But consider:

1) We could ensure healthy food is delivered vs. frozen pizza, soft drinks, and other foods that are expensive from a relative standpoint and cause health issues (Medicaid savings)

2) Amazon might argue with you assertion that the grocery store model is more efficient. Maybe the govt could outsource the supply chain to them, Walmart, or the like.

3) Many would quit welfare because they are using the EBT benefits for reasons they aren't intended. (e.g. fraud). Thus, the overall program would see savings due to reduction in the entitlement rolls.

And it wouldn't be that hard to implement. Nearly everything you purchase has a UPC label (produce being the main exception). Simply require that certain foods are exempt and the stores can change their computer systems to exclude them.

The REAL reason this doesn't happen, and the reason the delivery boxes never will either, is because of the food lobby. It's actually not a partisan issue at all. Mega rich corporations are protecting their revenue streams by lining politicians pockets. This isn't hyperbole either, I actually have close friends who work in this space and know the dynamics well. The ideas you're talking about aren't new.

That said, they're slowly making progress on sugary drinks but even that is a huge uphill battle and not that likely. Candy and cookies will never get taken off the list.

The other reason its challenging is cost of implementation, it's tremendous. Its a lot more complicated than you think to ban certain items, massive administrative task. When you really get down to it you realize just how much grey area there is.

What they need to do is get the program to a WIC model, start there. If the SNAP program had started with this kind of model we wouldn't have the issues we're having now.

We just need to do EBT like WIC. You can only buy what the government says you can buy.

No, because they will just sell them instead. The food box proposal is the best idea. End the EBT cards and issue a booklet containing 52 vouchers that allow you to obtain a food box for the week containing all the essential food sources for your family. A proper ID will be needed as well to obtain said box.

There is still fraud with people selling food stamps for cash. You'd also need to implicate an ID law where your food stamps can only be claimed by you. But progressives hate IDs and would bitch about that too.
