Why are there two separate speed limits on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge?

Why is there one speed limit for 18 wheelers and another for regular cars? I could understand if there was a 15 mile an hour difference between the two but cars can go 60 and 18 wheelers can go 55. Why not just have them be the same?

I wish it were like that everywhere tbh

Trucks stay in the right lane. Vehicles can pass going slightly faster as to not plug up both lanes.
IDK.

One of the few things La. has gotten right, IMO.
Also relegates their asses to the right lane.
Where they belong.

Best I recall, a few years ago there was a rash of fatal accidents on the bridge involving 18 wheelers. It was determined there would fewer wrecks if...
A) 18 wheelers drove slower
B) 18 wheelers had to stay in the right hand lane and couldn't pass.

Because politicians wish it to be so. Same with the 60mph.
Politicians set many of our speed limits.

I was going about 60 in the rain the other day over the basin and got passed by a truck. I usually stay around 65 but slowed down some for the rain. I get passed by trucks there all the time.

To try to discourage the big rigs from getting in the passing lane

It allows them to get popped for reckless driving at 70 instead of 75

The last few times I've driven, they seem to no longer care about this and pass in the left lane as if it were normal highway.

They all use Waze and know when cops are radaring.

I like how the cops are never around when they drive in the left lane or are going faster than 55, but whenever I was speeding they were coincidentally always there

Must be a scheme to create accidents, because they seem constant on that bridge.

Because someone’s buddy owns a sign shop and they do this so he can gouge the state twice for signs.

The bridge gets a lot safer and less prone to accidents when they enforce the truck restrictions.

The cops will return for a few weeks after the next accident.
