Guitar Advice

Hey guys....Just bought my first guitar and I want to start learning how to play. Any good websites out there to help learn the basics? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at a few and go with one you like. There's marty swartz, andy guitar, tony polecastro. Plus more.
tony polecasrto has a 21 part beginning series that is very good. But they are all good. Those guys all have downloadable material as well.
All these guys focus on teaching you a few chords, showing you how to practice the transitions, then strumming, then playing easy songs to get you going. Use one of them.
But... find someone good. Watch a few. Compare them. Avoid the guys who are filming with their iphone. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it just usually means they aren't pro teachers.
For example. There's also a guy on there, pretty sure calls himself country song teacher, can't remember his name, but he teaches you G, Cadd9, D, E and plays all his songs with those chords. My advice would be to not use him. It's a very easy way to start playing but you'll never advance or learn anything else. I just don't like it for some reason.
Take it slow, Focus on three chords and the transitions first.

Thanks to you and Ham for the advice. I just got done checking out justinguitar and it is a good website with a lot of information. I'll have to check out some of the guys on youtube tomorrow and see if those videos help. Playing around with the guitar tonight, as with every first timer, it will take time to get my fingers trained. I was able to practice a couple of cords. I'm excited about learning and I know it will take a lot of practice and patience to get use to it. Since I am new to this, do you or anyone else have any advice on what gear/equipment I need? The guitar I bought is a Ibanez RG6003FM. I wasn't able to get an amp tonight but I will be going back to get one in the next couple of weeks. Is there anything else I need?

Get a clip on tuner, some picks. Grab a capo, but you probably won't need it for a little while.

There is a wormhole of pedals you are on the edge of. I bought a modeling amp. It digitally mimics a shitload of things. I honestly don't know if it's better, but it's what I did.
Buy picks you like. I had no idea there were so many I wouldn't like.
Fender Riffstation is a good free app. It goes along over the top of YouTube videos and shows you the chords coming up for strumming. It does nothing for single line or individual note riffs or lead stuff.

Yeah,you need to get an amp as soon as possible.You need to be able to hear yourself.
Since you are just learning, I suggest a small Fender Mustang for now,It has effects already on it,and will do until you start learning. You can find the small ones at pawn shops for 75 bucks.
And get the clip on tuner.

I took it up 16 years ago at age 40.Best decision I've ever made.
It takes time and practice,but most things worthwhile do.

There are a ton of youtube videos on this. Also Guitar Center is in deep shite as well.
Gibson is just strange. Epiphone sucks for the most part and has a worse reputation. Gibson itself has nothing in a beginner price range. And the things they try to have in the beginner range arent too great. $699-899 for a bare bones LP that looks like it is bare bones, or worse yet an SG. A high end SG is ugly in itself. The bare bones SG is terrible. And you have an epiphone SG that is just a couple hundred less anyway.
To get a desirable Les Paul, you need to buy their reissues and custom shops. Who is dropping 5 Grand plus as a beginner?

Just a very fun hobby. I'd even suggest to the OP to get an accoustic as well. Acoustic can go anywhere. An electric and an amp and pedals? Less so.

Gibson using Epiphone as its entry level guitar brand wasn't a bad idea. Their problem was, is, and will continue to be inconsistent quality. A great LP even in a half decent amp is the best sounding instrument on earth. However, when you're shelling out at least $1-2k on a guitar, inconsistency is unacceptable. You need to know that when you're buying a Gibson, you're getting a real bonified Gibson. The fact that you could shell out ungodly sums of money and still get a lemon is insane for such a legendary brand. It's ok for Gibson to be the Cadillac and Epi to be the Chevy as long as you know what you're getting when you drive off the lot.

I'm sort of self taught (15 years ago) and wish I had the free youtube videos when I was learning. I got frustrated easy. I still do. I need to watch some of these videos and learn better technique. I have trouble with bar chords and chords that require my hand to stretch really far (don't have huge hands). But I've found that if I keep at it, I'll eventually get it.

oh crap, I just ordered one. haven't played in many years and had surgery on my left thumb, now arthritic. thought it would help and I have a 40 minute commute to use it. don't hurt me please.
