Wish I could find someone out in katy that I could subject my awful rhythm guitar to. Lol

Tough to find people or even bring up the subject “do you play?” I believe I have a couple nice guitars that you’d expect a better player to own.

here is a suggestion,of a good way to find people to jam with.
Check out the website for Nashville Songwriters association International. find out about your local chapter,go to 1 of the meetings. I promise you,you will find somebody.

Start with learning basic chords like C, D, G and E

I've been practicing the basic cords also but over the last week, I've mainly gone by tabs. Prob. not the right way to begin but tabs has been a little easier to remember.

I will. I have to go and get the tool(s) tomorrow. I'm on orders up here in DC for a year and I don't have my set of allen wrench up here with me. I also have been watching videos on how to change the strings, so I think I will do that also.

Here is something you might try: Use some fatter strings, they will not settle in as low in the slots in the nut,and it may be just enough,to solve your buzz problem, since its only on the first fret. We're only talking about a few 1/1000ths of an inch to make a difference. You might like the sound difference too.
Then if it doesn't,do the adjusting.

I think the guitar came with 09/42 or 10/46 size strings on it. What size and brand would you suggest? I am mainly interested in playing rock/metal music.

That is probably a question, better answered by somebody else. That's not exactly the type of music that I play,so I wouldn't want to to give an answer that might mess you up.
For what I do,fat strings can work well.
The guys at guitar center can probably help you better.
Go on by there tomorrow, and just take your guitar with you.

Auggie...I got the problem fixed. I had to make 2 or 3 very small turns to the left on the truss rod. I also put new strings on it and it sounds great. The first fret still has a very faint buzzing sound at the end but I can barely notice it. I guess I did alright considering I didn't even know what a truss rod was before yesterday . Thanks for your help and advice.

Congrats man!
Glad if I encouraged you to help yourself,us people can always do more than we give ourselves credit for.

I wish that I had realized all of my capabilities when I was younger, and didn't get slowed down by self doubt.
