Four parents have sued the Bossier Parish Schools for allegedly subjecting their children to unwanted and unconstitutional Christian messages and indoctrination.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Shreveport. Americans United for Separation of Church and State filed the lawsuit on behalf of the parents. The organization describes itself as a religious liberty watchdog group.

The lawsuit alleges widespread use of prayer on school property and during school events, in classrooms at all levels, at sporting events, at graduation ceremonies, during awards assemblies and at student government meetings. It also alleges that school officials openly proselytize students in Christianity.

At some Bossier Parish school graduation ceremonies, faculty or administrators delivered prayers from the podium through a public address system. The lawsuit mentions graduations at Airline, Benton, Bossier, Haughton, Parkway and Plain Dealing high schools.

One Bossier choir director said she won't allow the choir to perform in venues other than churches. School choir concerts include songs that are almost exclusively Christian worship songs.

A Kingston Elementary teacher required her students to memorize a Christian prayer and recite it before lunch.

A Legacy Elementary teacher developed a daily practice of asking her students what they wanted to pray for. The teacher then led the class in Christian prayer.

At Airline High, the health teacher told students about the importance of religion in her life. She used Christian-themed films to teach students about alcohol, drugs, dating violence and unsafe sex. She asked students their favorite Bible verse and asked an openly Muslim student to read aloud from the Bible.

A science teacher at Airline invited students to make a presentation on the "Creation point of view." She then directed the class in a reading of Genesis and supplemental material debunking various aspects of evolution.

A teacher told a child that Jesus was angry at those who did not attend church, and that non-Christians are bad people.

Bossier Parish Schools allowed representatives of local churches to encourage students to participate in religious activities and to distribute religious materials on campuses during the school day.

We need to send Phil Robertson to Bossier to educate these parents. Disgusting.

Pushed that agenda a little too far, it appears.
But, there are really worse problems that public schools are facing

If we didn't have teachers unions and teacher tenure, this idiot would already have been fired.

Meaning they shouldn’t have prayer at school or students shouldn’t be taught about religion?

BTW, Separation of church and state is not in the constitution and doesn’t mean prayer cannot happen at publicly owned venues. It just means the government will not officially indorse or be forced the follow the rules of any religion.

ETA: I did not see the teacher’s remarks. I’m a teacher and that’s just stupid as all hell.

The parents are identified in the lawsuit only as "Does 1-4." All wished to remain anonymous to protect their children, according to the lawsuit.

Bull. shite. They want to stay anonymous to protect themselves. Doesn’t the School District have the right to face their accusers?

Not a big deal

This is dumb

Not a big deal unless she forces them

Meh... was probably ok until asking kids to read from the bible

Don’t we already have enough intolerant dumbasses to deal with in the classroom?

Would love to see how many people on this board who disagree with this statement, are adamant about not taking away their constitutional right to carry firearms,

I’ll bet $100 they are memeber of a Baptist Church in town, but just want to try to cash in. Another $100 says they live in a tenement with wheels.

Have no problem with it. My children can learn about Christianity at church. I want my children to learn from the textbooks at school. If there's a world religion segment in history class, that's fine, but I don't want teachers to push their beliefs on students.

ETA:if my kids were to go to public school. We may send them to private school.

Good. Religion, unless it covers all religions, has no place in taxpayer funded schools. Period.

Religious indoctrination should be done by the family, if that's their thing, and not by schools. Plenty of parents have no desire to have their children indoctrinated.

??

The teacher is literally teaching against what the state has told her to teach. Pretty big deal.
