It appeared to be a record-setter, but now it will come with an asterisk: poached.

Had Johnson not circulated the photos of himself posing with the buck during daylight hours, along with comments noting that he had taken it with a bow the previous evening, he might have gotten away with hunting after legal shooting hours. Legal hunting hours for all game animals in the state of Texas are one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset.

Guarantee he has a salt life sticker on his F-250

How do they know what time he killed it?
Posted on 1/27/18 at 8:42 pm to TDcline
With truck nuts on that F250.

I have met Travis a few times. Super nice guy and had a great reputation before all this went down. Big deer make people do stupid things.

How the frick do they know he shot it at night?

You see bigger deer than that in the quad

Why couldn’t he say he shot in legal hours then tracked it? Should have posted this in op as well
Still not exactly sure how the investigation was so solid that he could get fined 53k

According to the release, Johnson told McCuistion he wounded the buck on Sept. 30, then began pursuing it, but didn't get an opportunity to finish it off until a week later. An investigation of the scene of the kill, near Pilot Point, and a conversation with a landowner adjacent to the property where Johnson hunted, led to the criminal investigation. Read more here: LINK

He was jammed up with several charges including potential felonies which isn't ideal for a hunting baw so he admitted to taking the buck at night in a plea deal.

For that monster? Worth it

That article has a bunch of unanswered questions....
$53K for hunting at night? Seems a tad high.
Did he spotlight it or was just a few min after legal shooting hours?
What if he shot it that evening then waited until morning to go look for it? Thats not illegal.
Was he trespassing like the article indicated?

Nobody ever reads the links.

How does anyone know what "evening" means? He has a history I guess but how would anyone know he just didn't find the deer until the day after? Stupid article is stupid and stupid poacher is apparently criminally stupid...

POTENTIALLY UP TO.
He still has to go through the legal process. Could be a lot less.

The fine includes restitution for the animal which in Texas in charged by the inch for a trophy buck like that.

It’s a pretty poorly worded article and doesn’t really explain how he got caught other than an “investigation”
