Shreveport is Louisiana's answer to Jackson. And it used to be a clean, decent place when I grew up there (in the bad ol' days of segregation in the 1950s-60s).
Now it's a sh*tthole, and isn't a State capital, or a major city like New Orleans or Memphis. It's just a SH*TTHOLE.

His dad was a radical and many expected him to be. But I say this optimistically and cautiously.
So far he has shown that he wants to make the city better. He showboated for the presidents visit and was told to tone that down if he wanted the support he needs.

Percy King, the Snake Man, was gunned down in his front yard in the middle of the day last week. He brought joy to thousands of children with his exotic animals. He had a passion for it. He would do birthday parties for the suburban kids with parents that could pay and do them for the inner city kids that couldn't pay.
What a waste.

quote:He is young and pretty radical but he has actually surprised me a bit with his willingness to at least try. On the business part, they have been anti business for quite some time. When Bernie Ebbers and WorldCom needed more space and wanted to expand in Jackson, they basically told him they didn't care whether he stayed or left. He built a big building out in Clinton. Many businesses have followed suit.
Doesn’t Jackson have a BLM type young mayor who wants to penalize white businesses?

That might not have been a bad dodge by the city. Is Bernie still in prison?

Grew up in Jackson/Brandon area and now live in Shreveport. Yeah Shreveport is bad but it’s not even close to Jackson level bad.

Too little too late

If you look at all of the businesses Jackson could have had just in the past 10 years it will make you sick. Just stupidity on the leaderships of Jackson's part.

Stories like this piss me off, good guy doing great things where they are really needed and where I would never do them

Has Jackson tried 'Prayers to Stop Crime'? Shreveport does it all the time. After a rash of murders the black preachers declare "Enough is Enough...time for Prayer."
It's been going on for 20 years. It doesn't seem to work.

Jackson has proximity to the Nissan plant and the new Continental plant. That’s 11k high paying jobs. It’s an advantage that they have not taken care of.
Cities are going to have crime. The problem is the judges giving light sentences on violent crime and five years for murder.
Then you have infrastructure issues. Schools don’t have running water and have sewage running in the hallways because of the neglect.
Then there is the distrust of white businesses and state government officials. This is what has caused a lot of problems. The other poster mentioned it, but there are some good businesses with good jobs that have wanted to take advantage of the low taxes and low real estate rate that have either been declined or outright ignored.

The biggest buildings left are largely municipal, county and state owned, churches or not for profit hospitals(I assume the property tax exemptions vary for each). Not much property tax revenue from any of that.

Jackson Public Schools haven’t been back in session since before Christmas Break. There is no water.
Jackson needs to sell JAN to the State or Rankin County. Use that money to fix water, sewer, and roads.

The value of JAN is the land around it.

First I heard of this murder. I can't believe someone killed Percy. He was a great guy.
This is the fricking problem in the black community. You have one guy here who works hard, does the right things in life, brings joy to children. Gunned down in his yard by some thug pieces of shite.
It's just sad.
