Most pointless war ever. No good or bad guys. Just slaughter.
Nonsense. That's a lazy approach to history. Germans were the bad guys. They started the war and are responsible for it.
By blaming it on no one, you don't learn the lessons, punish the guilty, and help happen again in the future.

Technically the Serbians started it and the complex systems of alliances pulled all the rest into it.

You’re being sarcastic, right?
Punishing those naughty Germans definitely made sure we wouldn’t see any further bloodshed.

Or the poor men that suffered -35 degree temps at The Battle of Chosin Reservoir. Can't imagine
I was part of the initial invasion of Iraq in '03 and it sucked. Like really really sucked. Everything about it. Just awful. What kept me motivated were the Marines before me who had it much much worse than we did. The jungles in WWII, Chosin Reservoir etc. and not to mention their casualty rate being so much higher than what Iraq was. Having experienced maybe 10% of what they did really made me appreciate what they did and it also helped me and I know many others continue on when times got really tough. The sacrifices those guys made many years ago are still benefitting us today in more ways than people realize.

But I bet they had fun in the whorehouses of Paris though.

I was thinking about how cold it was those men fighting in the Ardennes in the Battle of the Bulge, and the Marines at Chosin in Korea. When it rains for several days that's when I think about how much it would have sucked to have been in the trenches.

Kill
If you wanna read a damn good book on Chosin, read The Last Stand Of Fox Company one of the best books I’ve ever read, read it at SOI.

Neither of my grandfathers talked about their time in WW2 as I was quite young and they died before i could have had a good conversation with them about it.
But my wife’s grandfather lived to the age of 93 and one time we had a 5 hour talk about his time in the war. He talked about getting ripped on by Patton for a dirty and poor looking uniform. He then also talked about how Patton commended him on his clean rifle. He talked about how killing became mechanical and he talked about how it was an expectation to die and there was surprise when he lived.
But the thing he went on and on about was being cold. A cold that went to his core. I always found it fascinating it wasn’t the thrill/terror of battle but the boredom and cold he would rail against.
He was one hell of a man.

Wow. 3 pages and Darth still hasn't swung in to drop his intellectual (literate) biker bozo shite.
Good, because the Black Hand was actually a communist organization trying to spark the global revolution. Princip was just a heroin addict patsy.

Just because you are a pussy doesn’t mean we couldn’t find 1% of the population who aren’t.
Well, if it's just 1%, then that 1% is outnumbered. It was way more than 1% of the population of these countries fighting in the war.

Atleast those fellas didn't have to sit at home and listen to a wife bitching and asking why we have to drip pipes all night.

You are implying that there was a fundamental change in human nature/genetics 80 years ago. That’s not possible.
I'm saying there's a fundamental difference on how every generation after WWI processes war. You could probably convince my arse to storm the beaches of Normandy knowing what the stakes were, but you couldn't convince me to go over the trenches in the Battle of the Somme. I know it is pointless and I am dying for no reason in literal Mordor.

Well you should read about the Red Army and what held them together. It was the exact opposite of what you describe.
Well obviously the Russians were different, but I'm more referring to the Western Front. I feel absolutely certain if the Christmas Truce had continued there would be widespread mutinies along it on both sides.

Incredible what those soldiers encountered and withstood!

Pretty sure the Balkan area is what started WW1

the balkans were the excuse for WWI
germany was the shitass teenagers of the region at the time. they, as a nation, were young, dumb, and full of cum
they had a need to try and prove something, regardless of however stupid it was to everybody else. they needed to prove that THEY MATTERED

Being in New England, whenever it gets really cold outside, I often think about how shitty it must have been to be a colonist or soldier in the American Revolution.
No wonder fighting was often suspended in the winter.
