I thought that statement was pretty hilarious as well

You know that whole conference schedule all teams play during the season?
That's where the playoffs start.
If you can't be #1 of six teams over a sample size that big, then you damn sure don't deserve a shot to be the best of four in the country.

So basically you agree that you want pre-Wildcard NFL playoff rules.
All divisions are created equal. 7-9 Seattle gets in over 11-5 Saints. Got it.

You've rationalized logical fallacies so you can enjoy a title run.
And this whole time I was just thinking Alabama is probably one of the 4 best teams in the country.

I'd do something different but this something different honestly still likely gets Alabama in.
Power 5: auto bid
Highest ranked group of 5 team
Highest two teams ranked as wild card teams

I legitimately don't understand why Alabama being in this playoff is a big deal.
What an intellectually dishonest statement after tonight. I mean, there is a team out there that won the division, conference, and is undefeated. All the while beating your arch rival in a bowl game.
Then there is Bama - who didn’t play for their own conf title, and didn’t win their division, yet getting a shot at the title. And their only win over a top 15 team came after over a month’s rest. But yeah, I can’t see why people are hating on bama being in the playoffs....

Yes. Them's the rules.
And the saints still made the playoffs that year but they didn't win their division and had no right to host a home game.
Don't like it?
Win the division and it's not an issue.
And I'm a saints fan btw.

But you understand that applying that logic to the Bama scenario now means the Saints don't even make the playoffs, right?
Do you remember all those years the Saints didn't make the playoffs before the wildcard was implemented despite the fact we were likely the #2 NFC team behind the 49ers?
The irony of you touting the current NFL rules is fricking astounding. You don't have to win your division to make the playoffs.

Yes.
So?
It's the rules and you're free to campaign to change it.
I actually like the wildcard system as that is what's supposed to prevent that scenario from happening while keeping the playoff system as neutral as it can be and ignoring style points which is rampant in the college game and it is pretty good.

Yes. That's a good example of why the wildcard system was implemented and it's worked out pretty well.

So?
Is there any kind of preferential treatment and bias in that system?

And yet those teams with losing records still are the best teams of their divisions and they get automatic bids. And that is the system everybody supports because it rewards division winners.
And it doesn't care about just the right number of w's and l's. It cares about the number of w's and l's relative to the other teams you are arbitrarily grouped with. That alone prevents it from being the utopia-like system you and your melt arectrying to make it out to be. And that's without discussing the fact that 3/8 of the NFL teams make the playoffs, while roughly 1/30 make the college football playoffs.

I have news for you. Not everybody supports the NFL system. And the people that matter support the college football system. That doesn't include you or any of your fellow meltees.

A numbers based system is much better system than a flawed one like the CFP that is devalued more and more by human emotion and bias.
Devalued by whom exactly? Which champion from this system is considered illegitimate?

It's like complaining about Hillary Clinton getting more popular votes than Trump and still losing.
Yes, that is exactly what it's like. Except you have it backwards. You and your fellow meltees are the Hillary faction in the scenario.
quote:
you're complaining about arbitrary divisions, why aren't you complaining about Bama not making it to atlanta having a better record than auburn?
What does Alabama losing to auburn during the regular season have to do with the arbitrary divisions in the NFL?
Posted on 1/2/18 at 12:24 am to Sentrius
But those are not the rules as they exist today. Those are the rules you want to implement.
My entire point is that you want a system where the better team is penalized for not winning a conference or a division no matter how good they are and no matter how terrible the other divisions and conferences are.
Having a system that automatically forecloses that better team from making the playoffs is absolute bullshite when all conferences aren't created equal.

It's the same numbers based system as conferences in college are based on.

Dude, Just a few short years ago, College football changed pretty radically and is always under constant pressure and that will be even bigger now thanks to Bama backdooring again.

The people who have votes in the polls.

Which champion from this system is considered illegitimate?
We literally had an illegitimate champion in USC in 2003 thanks to some BS polls.

Actually the electoral college is enshrined in the constitution as the Supreme law of the land.
What backdoor enablers support is an arbitrary electoral college that changes constantly based on style points and having ugly losses.
That's not something I will ever support.

You can't support Bama backdooring into the CFP without backdooring in the conference title game.
But you just can't ignore math I guess.

I wouldn’t have cared if UCF made the playoff, but them playing in a super shitty conference makes me okay with them being left out in every circumstance of the current system. Is it fair? No. But it’s the system we have.
The win today reminds me of OU’s win over Bama in NOLA a few years ago with Trevor Knight. Bama didn’t give a frick and half assed it.
I also am continually amazed at how people legit don’t think Bama is a top 4 team in the country. I know it gets old seeing them win and what not, I hate it myself, but they skullfricked the reigning champions and No. 1 team in the country tonight. They deserve to be there.

They can win the two CFP games by 70 points for all I care and it still doesn't make their resume any better.
As it was mentioned earlier, we're getting to a point where teams may consider taking a strategic loss to get an extra week of rest and still make the playoff after seeing Bama do it twice now. That has to be nipped in the bud as conference and division titles should matter.
