The movie starts great with a decent plot. Completely fails the ending. Me and the SO we’re like is that it??!!! When the credits rolled.

I hated Matt Damon’s character. The Vietnamese character made no sense at all, speech-wise and story-wise. Ending was strange and very weak. Great concept, terrible execution.

The premise was outstanding, but I agree that they failed miserably in the second half. I've just come to accept that Matt Damon actively looks for the preachiest, pious lecture vehicle that can be committed to film, ad then goes with it. We're in agreement in my house that after this one and Suburbicon, we're done wih him and Clooney both.

Just read the synopsis. What a load of shite. I thought the concept was half assed due to the physics at that size not being different at all judging from trailers. But then it does that crap? No wonder it has a 26% Audience Approval.

The trailer makes it look like it could be another cute Payne movie ala Election or Sideways...

But then you read the User reviews:

If you came to see this movie because of the trailer or because of curiosity of what a world would be like if you were 5 inches instead of 6 feet, then you paid for about 45 minutes. The other hour and a half is a completely different movie that has minimal to do with downsizing and is not what the trailer suggests.

So that's a pass.

Wow that user review is 100% spot on.

The vodka scene from the trailer isn’t even in the movie.

My goodness...I just read the synopsis on Wikipedia, and it sounds awful. I couldn't really tell what the plot was during the trailers, but it looked fairly intriguing. I understand why they wouldn't include much of the plot in the trailer though...awful!

Why did they shave their eyebrows but not their pubes when shrinking?

I think i watched half of it - couldn't figure out what the point was.

Matt Damon gets really small isn't a plot, there should be an "and then we have to rescue him from space" or something.

So since I'll be avoiding this, what makes it go in a completely different direction, and what is that direction?

It hits the trifecta of fun: overpopulation, socioeconomic inequality, and climate change. But they're so small!!!!

SPOILERS...

quote:

The next morning, Paul notices that one of Dušan's housecleaners is Ngoc Lan Tran, a Vietnamese political activist who was jailed and downsized against her will. Ngoc Lan was the sole survivor of a human smuggling attempt to the United States in a television box and had her leg amputated upon arrival. Attempting to assist Ngoc Lan with her prosthetic leg, Paul returns to her house in the slums outside of the walls of Leisureland. After assisting Ngoc Lan's dying friend, Paul attempts to repair Ngoc Lan's prosthetic leg only to break it and render her unable to work. In return, Paul works for Ngoc Lan's cleaning service where he also assists in gathering food from around the city that Ngoc Lan distributes throughout the slums. Dušan attempts to release Paul from his obligation by taking him to Norway, the site of the first small community, with his friend Joris Konrad, but Ngoc Lan also wishes to come along. Ngoc Lan had received international attention after her arrival in the United States, including personal correspondence from the inventor of downsizing, Dr. Jørgen Asbjørnsen, who had previously invited her to Norway to express his regret at the abuse of his procedure.

While traveling in a fjord, Paul's boat encounters Dr. Asbjørnsen and his wife, Anne-Helene. Dr. Asbjørnsen announces that humanity is doomed, as the positive feedback of Arctic methane emissions cannot be stopped, and will result in the eventual extinction of the human race. Arriving in the first colony, Paul is shown that Dr. Asbjørnsen planned for such a contingency with the creation of a large vault inside a mountain to insulate the colony and preserve humanity in the event of an extinction. Paul is excited to enter the vault and asks Ngoc Lan to join him. She rejects his offer, saying that he does not need to enter the vault and can do good in their community by returning. Paul enters the vault, but changes his mind and leaves as the door is closing and subsequently blasted to seal the occupants inside, choosing to return with Ngoc Lan, Dušan, and Konrad.

Having returned to Leisureland, Paul assists Ngoc Lan in her duties of providing needed aid and supplies to the people of the slums.

It's like they completely abandoned the premise in the second half. You didn't even know they were shrunk at that point because of the focus on the poor people world. They needed a giant rat breaking in and destroying the city aka Godzilla or something.
