I met one this fall at my grandfather's estate sale. I didn't talk to her and the only reason I knew she was a bridge operator was because she said she had to get to a shift.

She was an amorphous blob that carted around an oxygen tank. Makes sense with the sitting.

$70k. Chicago Unions fricking the taxpayers. I was at the Chicago Convention Center for a conference. Came in with a piece of rolling luggage to set up my booth. Union guys said it was “cargo” and they had to take it into the Convention Center. My client said to let them do it. They put it on a pallet, one little piece of luggage, and used a forklift to drive it to the booth. Charged my client $275 for the effort.

Kicker was that they wanted me to take it off the pallet at the booth. I refused so they called a Supervisor over who radioed for a Stevedore (fork lift guy wasn’t authorized to move it by hand) to come over and lift it off the pallet. It was like the Sopranos or some shite. This was all before the fiasco with the electric cable plug box being under the carpet. That required two or three trades, I can’t remember, to lift the carpet up and get the box out.

i built a mechanical lift bridge a few years back. The control room was pretty nice. there was about 8 steps you have to take before it is raised all the way up, most of them having to do with car/pedestrian traffic.

with that said, it was not hard to operate it. I'd be willing to be they don't make more than $8-$10/hour, they weren't rocket scientist, but were in charge of operating a $30 million dollar bridge.

It's sad that we just are fine with professions paying the same rate as starter jobs.

..on one hand yeah, unions see fricking people, in the other hand not having them does too.

People say "well $100 in 1999 is $150 today", but wages haven't increased to match.

LAKE CHARLES -- The operator of Black Bayou bridge was killed when her clothing became stuck in a motor.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Myers says the accident happened early Tuesday (Dec. 1). Myers says 58-year-old Dorthy S. Carter, of Grand Chenier, was pronounced dead at the scene.

KPLC-TV reports deputies went to check on Carter about 4:30 a.m. after the Department of Transportation and Development asked them to because they could not contact her.

Myers says when deputies arrived they found Carter inside the control tower, face down in the motor. She says apparently Carter's clothing became stuck in the motor and she was unable to free herself.

The bridge has since reopened.

Most bridges are now operated remotely. For example the Rigolets and Pass Manchac bridges are operated from Pennsylvania. (they are owned and operated by the railroad company CSX I believe)

I feel like I'm here way too much. In ten years I got, well I haven't seen a post count in months, a lot of posts.
But I've seen people with 200-300k too
