Defense will most definitely be the strength of next year’s team. White could be the best linebacker in the SEC, and maybe best mlb ever at LSU (and that’s saying a lot). We have a lockdown corner in Greedy Williams and ridiculous depth at safety. Fehoko, Alexander, Lawrence and Shelvin give us more beef up front than we have had in a while.

The offense, however, is full of question marks:

QB: I am more hopeful than most here. My son was a hs qb and I spent about ten years doing the radio for a couple local teams. So I have seen dozens of hs qbs play, a couple who did play a little college. What a rarely saw was consistently accurate passers, good high school qbs do well to push a 60 % passing rate. Brennan is remarkably accurate, completing an amazing 69% of his passes as a senior for 3982 yds with 48 tds and only three interceptions. That is amazing. I saw good hs qbs struggle to throw 70% of their passes warming up. I don’t think people realize how good his senior stats are at any level of football. So qb is a place where I think we will be better than next year.

Running back: Okay, there is going to be a drop off when we lose Guice and Williams. There is reason for optimism with Hellaire, Brossette and Curry, but let’s not kid ourselves. We have been spoiled with Fournette and Guice. The only question is how big the drop off will be.

Tight ends: Foster Moreau has been a really solid tight end for LSU and could have a really big year. I see him sneaking on a Sunday squad one day. At 6’ 6” 255 pounds he has good size. He isn’t great at anything, but solid at everything. You don’t tip your hand as muc( with a te that can block and catch. There is good depth here with Pettigrew, Roddy and Washington. This unit should be an upgrade from last year.

Receivers: This is a heavy on potential, low on experience group which makes it anyone’s guess as to whether it’s an upgrade or downgrade. Chark will be hard to replace. Giles caught 69 passes at Texas Tech so he could be our possession guy and most experienced receiver. Marshall will play and could be a star early. Then you have a half dozen or more talented players with great potential - Drake, Anderson, McMath, Netherly, Dillon and Sullivan. The cupboard is hardly bare. Whether this group is an upgrade or not will depend on coaching and scheme.

Offensive line: The attrition, injuries and transfers from last year will help this year. We had some really young guys in Deculus, Ingram and Charles step up. I think Traore will be a major upgrade over Malone. I assume Weathersby is leaving. If Clapp stays, this line will be better, more experienced and deeper than last year. Even if he leaves, this still could surprisingly be a position of strength for LSU, having a weak line with a new qb and young rbs would not be good.

Fullback: Tory Carter was quite a surprise last year. He was a tough kid as advertised, but more athletic and versatile than I expected. He should be better than last year, one of those things high energy players, good for team morale.

Coaching: This is the big unknown. If Canada comes back, it has to be an upgrade from last year assuming chemistry with Orgeron holds up. This offense clearly got better over the season. As the players learned it, Canada added to it. I thought he changed it nicely later in the season to find where the defense was weak. Whether he stays seems questionable and if he leaves you have kids learning their third offense in three years, not ideal. I hope he stays for continuity purposes and to see how good the offense can be with an accurate qb with a stronger arm who can throw over the middle.

Summary: Who knows if the offense will be better. Etling was a gamer and you lose Chark, Guice and Williams. It will likely come down to qb play and coaching. Optimists have good reason for hope, pessimists good reason for concern.

Will moss be in the tight end rotation? I haven’t seen any film on him from nc state. I’m assuming he is more athletic than the other tight ends

Appreciate your post.
We have plenty of playmakers on offense, we just to find our strengths along with the weakness of the opposing defense. Uncertainy in the OC will be a Problem unless Canada stays.
Our defense should be considerably better coming out of the gate this year. Took too many games for the defense to gel and find their true roles this past season.
And as with any team, limiting the injuries will be crucial to having an excellent season.

If everything clicks just right for the Tigers, I think Miami will be in trouble come the end of August.

It’s easy to be insanely accurate when the comp. is not good. That being said if MB beats out LN. Let’s roll with him. I think either one will have their ups and downs next year. Etling was pretty safe with the ball. I don’t think we will see that from either QB.

Appreciate your analysis. The third facet of the game is Special Teams. Since we really didn’t have a game day coach, this year will be an improvement. The inconsistency of ST play is something that is easily correctable even with the kickers that were on this years roster. Punt returns were ok with Chark, but at the beginning of the season, I’ve never seen so many balls downed or caught within the 10 yd line. We will need somebody to step up. Maybe Stevens?
Punting lost more field position than gained.

If this group can muster 80% of what David and Wing did in 2011, then solid defense can win a lot of games. The issue will be the schedule.

You know you would think it’s easy to be insanely accurate because of poor competition, but it’s really not. Of course it’s easier, but accuracy for many qbs is more an innate thing than a learned thing.

Brees is special because he is so accurate. It’s not just a work ethic thing. Tim Tebow went through a handful of qb coaches, is athletic as heck, worked his butt off, and couldn’t throw straight.

HS qbs who throw 70 % for 4000 yds in one season at any level of competition are rare, period. I did the radio for many hs games where a good 3A team was playing a bad 2A team and it would still be like 11 of 20 passing for 200 yds or something. I am serious when I say half of the warm ups I watched before the games many hs qbs couldn’t hit 70 %.

What I don’t know is if Brennan will be athletic enough for the SEC. I am excited about it. The last qb LSU had who could throw straight was Mettenberger and I think Brennan will be more mobile than Mett.

Couple things, Roddy probably won't be on the team next year and Drake Davis may not have it mentally to succeed. He's not the brightest bulb.

QB- Brennan, Narcisse, JMac
RB- Brossette, CEH, Curry, Fournette, Provens
HB- Carter, Ducre, Sheffer
WR- Sullivan, Anderson, McMath
Slot- Marshall, Dillon
WR- Giles, Jefferson, Netherly
TE- Moreau, Washington, Pettigrew, Moss
LT- Charles, Savage
LG- Brumfield, Lewis, Campbell
C- Clapp, Cushenberry
RG- Ingram, Magee
RT- Traore, Deculus

DE- Lawrence, Farrell, Thomas
NT- Shelvin, Alexander
DE- Fehoko, Logan, Moore
BLB- Chiasson, Anthony, Cherry
ILB- White, Phillips
MLB- Taylor
OLB- Divinity, Thornton
CB- Williams, Goodrich
NB- Vincent, Kirklin
CB- Surtain, Fulton
FS- Paris, Eric Monroe, Harris
SS- Delpit, Stevens, Joseph
K- Tracy
P- ZVR, Growden

But obviously a lot can change. Battle, Weathersby and couple other guys could come back, it's still up in the air. I also don't see spots for a lot of the freshmen to contribute right away either.

The NFL plan for Foster (Cam’s plan) was to turn him into a left tackle. It’s getting late, and I don’t see enough size to him yet, so maybe he’ll stick to TE.

Nice post. Lots of good stuff there.

I’m starting to believe Canada won’t be back and a change will be announce soon after the bowl game. I’m also not convinced Fulton will be back on defense but think John Battle will be. We’ll have some off season ups and downs like we do every year but next year we should field a very competitive team. The schedule is brutal from the start and some young players are going to have to contribute right out of the gate.

The schedule was even more brutal in 2011, that's what made it so special

Yeah he will still be on the team next year and McMath Netherlands or Jefferson isn’t passing him.

I would hope Doesn't get much more immobile than Mett was. I'm excited to see what Canada can do with Brennan or Narcisse. I appreciate Etling. Guy was tough as nails and was dependable. But he is clearly limited physically in ways that I think Brennan and Narcisse aren't. Should be interesting. I say we're a dark horse playoff candidate if we can get good production on the ground from someone or by committee

LOL...I like that. Someone should tell Netherly about it. It might become his new nickname.

I think the big difference is we will be capable of throwing to the middle of the field and intermediate routes. We were so hesitant to attack those zones our passing game was easy to defend. Both Brennan and Narcisse can spin the ball so I expect us to be more aggressive.
