frick this scumbag. That is a pretty solid punishment.

A 34-year-old Texas man convicted of poaching a deer will have a hard time being a repeat offender — for the next five years, at least. That’s because a Texas judge has ordered John Walker Drinnon of Whitesboro, Texas, to spend every weekend of deer hunting season in the Grayson County Jail beginning on Dec. 30. The sentence has been imposed for the next five years, the Houston Chronicle reports. After first lying about it, Drinnon admitted to using a rifle to kill a 19-point buck in an archery-only county in the state.

Give that bastard the stomach virus for a year

I like it. Wish LA would adopt some heftier penalties for poaching.

I feel bad for him. He was probably really excited to take a buck of that caliber.
Sucks he has to get punished for HUNTING

Go troll on the OT.
Love the punishment. Dude is going to be dreading the start of deer season.

5 years seems a bit harsh, when you tally up the days that's damn near half a year in prison for shooting a deer. People get less than that for DWI's/drugs/ some violent crimes, etc

I don't really classify shooting from a roadway/vehicle hunting. That's just shooting.

What about making it, you spend the amount of time in jail by how old the deer was?

Correct!
Assuming it is Saturday and Sunday only...
Hunting season in that county is 99 days long.
99 days / 7 days per week = ~14 Saturdays and 14 sundays
14 days x 2 days per week = ~28 days
The season typically starts and stops on a weekend giving extra weekends per season.
=~ 30 days per season
30 days per season x 5 years = 150 days in jail
150 days / 365 days per year = ~.41 years in jail
If we are talking Fridays too, you are looking at 220 days or .60 years
I think the judge may have been too lenient, the fool is still free to poach Monday through Friday. So he really only took away ~30% of his hunting season away.
I like the sentence, but I think he should have given him 150 days in jail with the sentence suspended based on him working 1,500 hours (10 hours per day for the 150 days) of community service to be complete over the next 5 years (with a requirement of a minimum of 250 hours per year). Make his arse work picking up litter and trash in the off season on some WMAs.

Do the land owners happen to have asses made of sugar and/or trucks painted with glitter?
Asking for a friend.

Maybe 1 year per point.

I get the sentiment, but I feel this is backwards. While older mature bucks are harder to come by and more of a prized deer, the biggest issue hunters normally face is too many people killing young deer.
So that would be counterproductive to deer management if a 1.5 year old spike gets you 1.5 years, but a 7.5 year old buck that will probably die of natural causes soon gets you 7.5 years.
Now if you tack on the poaching, illegal weapon method, AND undersized / illegal deer now you are talking.
This jackass should have had "out of season" tacked on because it was an archery only county and there is no rifle season, but I guess that is where the poaching charge hits.

What a stupid "look at me" punishment from the judge.
Just suspend the dude's hunting license for 5 years and make him pay a nice fine like $5k or something.
Any attorney worth his salt will get this sentence changed.

Yeah, I mean, he already took the guys hunting license.
I have no problem with giving the guy jail time, but every weekend during deer season for 5 years is nonsense. Just give him whatever is appropriate for shooting from a road and poaching, and call it a day.
Novelty punishments like this are ridiculous.

Maybe a $5k fine for this guy was pointless. Maybe he didn't have the ability to pay said fine. Which would only bring more fines and penalties that he couldn't / wouldn't be able to pay back. All just costing the court and taxpayers more money. Or maybe he is loaded and the $5k would just be a drop in the bucket for him.
I don't know anything else about it, but maybe this was less a "look at me" by the judge and he weighed everything and felt this was the best case for future deterrent for this individual.
Also, we don't know if this is the first time this guy has had a run in or not.
You are probably correct though and the sentence will be changed or dropped in lieu of the payment of the estimated fine he will be faced with.

The fine is not the key.
How are stupid weekends in jail any different than taking the guys license away for 5 years?
1. His license is suspended for 5 years. Therefore, it is illegal for him to hunt. Ie, no need for the look at me "weekend jail time" sentence. If he gets caught hunting with a suspended license he will be sentenced to further penalties, etc.
2. If the judge deemed the suspended license was not enough then, sentence the man to a prison term as well. But make it an actual term, not a look at me weekends only over 5 years term.
Any way you slice this up, the judge is a dip shite "look at me" trying to generate some headline instead of actually trying to deter this moron from illegal hunting activities.

If the guy has already shown he doesn't care about the rules, he won't mind hunting without a license. By putting him in jail, at least the judge can make sure he's not hunting on the weekends, legally or illegally.
Plus, maybe it acts as a determent for future poachers, instead of a $100 fine.

Ruined a lot of weekends for this guy for 5 years for illegally killing a fricking deer? That's pretty fricking stupid unless he has prior's. I wonder what his sentence would have been if he shot a doe instead of that monster.
Posted on 12/22/17 at 11:50 am to Sparkplug#1
Don’t think it is relevant. Ole boy doesn’t pull over to shoot a doe. He will risk getting caught and breaking the law for that buck.

I like the penalty. Smart judge.
