Wanna get my dad a fifth for Christmas, he usually drinks twelve year olds. Don’t know much about bourbon especially when it gets to that price.

What’s the best fifth of it for the price I’d be paying?

Considering you’ll be buying on the secondary market, you’re much better off getting him something else for much cheaper that he will still enjoy.

Weller 12 is literally a baby Pappy.

WL Weller 12 is the exact same recipe as Pappy 12 for 1/4 the 2nd hand market price.

EH Taylor collection are all pretty solid, small batch, barrel proof, etc. In all, buffalo trace doesn't mess around its bourbons.

Buy a nice decanter.

Then, get a bottle of Weller 12yr and a bottle of Weller Antique 107. Mix approx 60/40 of 107 to 12 yr in decanter.

Just tell him it’s Pappy 15......

Last year I would've said the 13 yr Rye.

I've only tried the 10, 15 and 20 this year so...

ETA:

Yes - I'm in the position to have tried a bunch of 'em...

If you want some unique whiskey then I can recommend George Washington's Whiskey. It is made using his same recipe at his distillery located at Mount Vernon. It's rye whiskey and they also sell brandy. Comes with a cool history explanation.

LINK

You can only purchase them in person at Mount Vernon though. I'd be happy to help if you are interested though.

My brother-in-law manages a country club that is able to get a bottle or two each year from a wholesaler. They keep them locked up behind the bar. If you want a shot it costs $25 a drink. Insane but some of the high rollers at the club will pay that.

Pappy's nice but there are others just as nice without the price

Colonel E.H. single barrel - from the same distiler and some think it's better than Pappy. If you can find it it is usually limited to one purchase at a time.

basil hayden - really nice and low price point

Calumet Single rack black 10yrs

get him a William Larue Weller or a Old Forester Birthday Bourbon instead. if you want a rye, get him a Thomas Handy Sazerac.

I have had pappy from 10 to 23, while very good, not nearly worth the price you’ll pay. phenomenal bourbons and whiskeys can be had for far less.
