Unofficially, west of Baton Rouge and New Orleans and south of Alexandria you will find areas of Cajun culture. Striking difference between St. Francisville and just across the river in New Roads.

Cajun country as it is todayThis map indicates where the cajuns spread out to cover in time. You can add south east Texas to this as well.

The area where the first arrivals is much smaller and appears to be the area surrounding Lafayette.

A little known fact is some of the French that were in Acadia had married local indigenous indians. The people that became known as cajuns have some native American indian DNA.

I'm from Avoyelles. Avoyelles Parish is known for its French colonial history and tradition of French language use. It's still pretty traditional. I think we're way more traditional in many ways than most "Cajun" parishes. To me time slows down in the area. More authentic "Cajun French" traditions are still a part of life here! Even with the younger generations. I'm 40 and have three kids. I made it a point to show them the tradition and ways of our people. IE: Speaking some of the slang in french, boucheries, how to cook the foods from way back, authentically. I guess you can see where my viewpoint is.

I live in Evangeline Parish. I’ve been around Cajuns my entire life. If you’re not a Cajun, to them you are the lowest form of shite on the earth. Not Catholic? Even lower form of shite. They literally will try to look down on you for not being a coonass, especially the older women. Most are some of the biggest smartasses you’ll ever meet in your life. A few great ones sprinkled in but not nearly enough to outweigh the smartass in most of them.

The younger generation mostly consists of 5’5 offshore baws who drive F-250s that they purchase after their first hitch, and then have to sell on Craigslist after they’re laid off. You can normally spot them in small/medium affliction or express shirts hanging around Nighttown or City bar.

I'd vote Vermillion parish where a lot of folk still speak French when out and about.

It’s like you took every single stereotype and cliche from every oilfield/Laffy thread ever and regurgitated it here.

If everyone you meet seems to be an a-hole, you're the a-hole.

What about the River Cajuns? My ancestors were among the first from Canada and settled in St. James in 1765.

Ville platte And mamou folks laugh at this.

I was raised in VP and currently live in Lafayette... Lafayette is nowhere near the level of Cajun/coonass that Evangeline Parish is.
