Tipping/gift for the mailman at Christmas

Is this practice a bullshite Yankee big city thing? Something that’s always been done and I’ve never realized it? Our mailman just left a Christmas card in our mailbox, with his business card (that says he’s a mailman) attached. Seems weird.

I’ve always done it. My father does it.
Something small goes a long way during the year.

Only in America do we constantly find the need to tip people when it’s not necessary.

I don't trust the mailman.

Some people do it. But

His salary comes from your taxes.

Do you enjoy receiving things in a timely manner? If so, $20 gift card.

They make like 100k per year already. I'm not joking either.

I have a friend who is a mailman and people on his route give him a bunch of liquor, gift cards and cash. He's on a conversational basis with many of them.

It seems like almost every time I see them it's a different person. Makes leaving a tip pointless.

Seriously, I paid a lot extra to few packages next day 2 weeks ago and did not get them until today. After several phone calls to the distribution center and tracking online - I was told the packages were on the truck all last week.

I think he meant for your wife to find it.

I do it and for the garbage man too. I own a small business and work out of our home. They constantly have to navigate my vehicles.

I knew about the customary larger tip for barbers/maids/etc around Christmas time. Never knew that mailmen and trashmen should get a tip. They’re government employees. Weird.

Maybe you should tip this year.

I find that the practice of tipping the mail carrier is reasonable for rural carriers, as they do a lot of extra stuff and are generally on a more personal level with people along their route. I live in a subdivision and honestly, couldn't tell you whether my mail carrier is a man or a woman. back when I lived in the country, I knew my carrier by first name....

The mailman is fricking your wife with more than his tip.
