Professional sports being 'fixed' or at least influenced...

I've been reading threads on the Saints Board and after talking with many Saints fans since the Thursday game, there has been much talk of that game being 'fixed'. I don't really want to focus on that game specifically, but curious what ya'll think about games being fixed or at the least, intentionally influenced by the refs at the direction of the league. I'm not a conspiracy theorist in the least, so my natural inclination is to believe that the game is played on the field and there is no influence from any outside source. I've followed sports my entire life and I would be crushed to find out that it was all a sham. I just don't believe it. But, a few things worth discussing:
First, I've gambled on sports (specifically football and some baseball) my entire adult life. To anyone that follows spreads, it is absolutely astonishing how accurate Vegas is with their spreads. They put the over/under within a few points probably 90% of games. How in the hell do they do this with such consistency? It's incredible how often Vegas sets a number that seems like a sure win, 80% of the money comes in on one side, and the other side hits. It's uncanny how often that happens and people make a living off of 'fading' the public.
Second, let me take you back to around 2001 or so. I was in a crowded dance club with my friend Mike, another hardcore gambler. He is a strong believer that the leagues or fixed and was going on and on about it. He was trying to convince me the coaches 'play the spread' and I continually called him an idiot. An extremely sexy woman standing next to us interrupted and said that I was wrong, coaches do indeed 'play the spread'. I called her an idiot too and her response was that her husband spent 4 years as a Div 1 football player and 10 years in the league including 2 Super Bowls and that he has also said the sport was rigged. I asked her who her husband was and it was Tom Rathman, Fullback from Nebraska and 49ers. I didn't believe her and she showed me her ID proving her last name was Rathman and she had a California address.
Third, I suggest you any professional sports fan read The Fix Is In. It's a dated book, but the premise is that fans lose sight that the number one goal of professional sports is and always has been to make money. In order to do this with longevity, the fans have to fully believe that the play on the field is honest. BUT, the leagues make their money by television rights and advertising, so fan viewership is of the extreme importance. There are lots of things to suggest the leagues 'create' or influence drama to ensure 'must see' tv. When you think of things like the Saints winning after Katrina, Peyton Mannings last season, etc, it'll make you wonder. How often do series in NBA and MLB go 7 games? A LOT! They sure don't leave money on the table often, do they?
These days, there is so much money in College Football that the same argument can be made. I don't remember the exact year, but around 2010 or so both Florida and Bama were undefeated around midseason, and as the season wore on, the league refs were clearly doing their best to keep them both undefeated. The SEC wanted to keep at least one team in the National title hunt and they only way they could ensure that was for FLA and Bama to be undefeated in the SEC championship. I think that was year of the Patrick Peterson P.I no call against Bama. There were a lot of similar calls for both teams that year. It was crazy to see some of the calls those teams got. To me, that convinced me the SEC has too much money at stake to completely cannibalize itself to the point of hurting its pocketbook.
Do ya'll have similar observations? What do ya'll think is happening behind the scenes? If this is occurring, how have there not been any major whistleblowers blowing the lid off of this yet?
I know, TL:DR...But I couldn't condense all that into 3 short sentences like half you illiterate, ADHD punks are able to digest easily.

Idk if I want to spend the time reading that or watch a movie. It'd take the same time.

There is certainly 'influence' in some games that favor one team.
Regardless, the Saints game is a horrible example. The Falcons were gifted many calls throughout the game that were considered ticky-tack, but it's not like ATL won the game through those things. Did it make it easier? Yeah, of course, but Matty Ice threw what? Three picks? Kamara also got hurt.
It was never going to be an easy game to win and I think it's really dumb to think the refs and league orchestrated an ATL win before the opening kickoff.
If you believe in such a thing then you would have to believe in the NFL orchestrating the Red Sox after the boston bombing or Houston's World Series win following Hurricane Harvey. Which would be bullshite.

Two thoughts;
One, you have to show a picture of Tom Rathman’s wife. That is a requirement. She has not aged well. So we will skip that part.
And two, you have to post something funny like If NFL Refs played Fantasy Football,

I hope to God football isn't fixed. I will not even gamble or play fantasy football because it keeps the sport pure to me. Sometimes it is very fishy the way games are called. I completely believe that some teams get the benefit of the doubt on calls.

i am not saying its fixed... but i bet college fb every week. And i can tell you last week when i needed a td to cover the fau team total and james sorry arse franklin busted a would be 70yd td with 1min left in the game only to drop the ball at the 1yd line before crossing the goal line i would have fought anyone who said it wasnt fixed.

I think the best word you used is “influenced”. There is a lot of money in sports and we all know money controls everything. Those who think and hope for the NFL to die are kidding themselves. Too much money being tossed around. Why did Alabama back into the BCS playoffs again? Money or viewership specifically. And I agree with you on the Vegas stuff.
My final note is that sports is reflecting life, governments to be more precise.

Kings vs Lakers series in 2002, especially game six.
No way that shite wasn't rigged.

The refs don't have to cheat. The league can cheat by assigning a specific crew to a game.
If the REC wants the gumps to win a tough game, just send the crew that calls the fewest holding penalties. If Goofdell wants Seattle to win, send a crew that ignores DPI unless it's blatant. If you want Baltimore/Cincy to lose, send a crew that calls a tight game for late hits.

I don’t think Goodell made a call and said make sure Falcons win I will say, I’ve never seen Payton get like that in a press conference, especially after a loss. Anytime he says something controversial it’s usually only after a win. To hear a head coach in the nfl of over a decade, that’s gone through plenty of awful losses, much worse than this, say what he said about the refs, something wasn’t right.
ETA: At worst, I think the ref crew just dislikes Payton

I’m sure some games have had some players or refs influenced by gambling interests, but I don’t believe in a wide conspiracy Bc the public would find out.
I do believe the LSU-Auburn 2006 game was fixed.

It's obvious the SEC is against LSU. They have to beat the refs and the other team.
The same for the saints, honestly the rest of the country is biased against Louisiana.
Feel better?

Trying not to be a homer, but take the Saints/Lions game earlier this season. Saints dominated every facet of that game in the first half. Well on the way to a blowout. One of the shortest halves of football I’ve ever seen. IIRC first half ended at like 1:20.
Then it was like the Saints completely forgot the rules of the game in the second half. Drives extended by penalty. Hell they called consecutive IP penalties on a damn XP attempt. It was 4:30 before the game ended. The officials impacted the play in the second half by suddenly becoming keenly aware of every hand placement by the Saints defense. The game ended up insanely closer than it ever should have been.
Now if it weren’t for the disparity in the way the game was called from half to half I could see this argument as being overblown. But it turned a blowout into a close game, and that doesn’t happen without influence from the officiating crew.
I mean we love to hate on the SEC refs at LSU especially when it comes to Bama and get laughed at. Then you look at the statistical improbablity of the number of holding calls against Bama vs the rest of the league and you start to wonder.

It’s an excuse made by the losing side bc they can’t accept losing. Ever hear the winning squad say we won because the game was fixed? Nothing worse than someone who blames the refs EVERY time his squad loses.

Well I would think the league would have wanted the saints to win. Giving the Cowboys a better chance at making the playoffs

Well-here's what has got me.
Mayweather vs McGregor. And the silence/ignorance.
Real world scenario-McGregor looks like a fool, doesn't land a shot, gets knocked out in the 1st.
Billion dollar event scenario-Y'all better go out and make it look good for the fans. These advertisers want that money. Let's make a precedent.
If you've got any type of real martial arts background or have boxed, you know this fight was a farce.

A lot of talk about football ITT, but there is no more poorly (or suspiciously) officiated sport than college basketball.

It is most definitely influenced. Honestly it probably always has been the thing is now it is nearly impossible to hide. With technology and so much information available it can't be hidden.
