Dreamers’ Fate Hangs Over Efforts to Avert Government Shutdown

LINK

WASHINGTON—A long-running fight over immigration threatens to spark a government shutdown later this month and add to Republicans’ political and policy challenges moving forward.

GOP lawmakers are divided over when to tackle one of the most inflammatory issues to their voters: how to handle the fate of so-called Dreamers, young people brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents.

President Donald Trump in September ended an Obama-era program shielding them from deportation, with the protections beginning to expire in early March. That gave Congress six months to pass legislation protecting them. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) are expected to meet with Mr. Trump and GOP leaders on Thursday to discuss year-end legislation.

Immigrant-rights advocates are pushing hard for a resolution this year. That is also the message from such pro-immigration advocates as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, whose stances more often align with Republicans.

Let it shut down a month, great way to smoke out the "nonessential" workers.

90% of govt would continue, just another sham.

Trump already scrapped the Dreamers program 4 or 5 months ago.

Democrats want to leverage government over bringing it back.

Democrats would sell their children if they thought it was politically expedient. They have no souls.

Kind of odd because I think Trump's supporters generally wouldn't give a shite about any shut down.

I guess they are attempting to strong arm instead of working with the administration. No shocker there.

A shutdown will play into the hands of Trump's intent to shrink Obama's Bureaucratic Deep State, as the services of many of these (crony) Hires won't be missed.

Another boomerang on the Dems.

As someone who has had a small business negatively impacted by previous government shutdowns, I can say that you are 100% wrong.

They would be the cause of it, but I'm sure the media and CTR will blame Trump somehow.

Can Trump decree that any government employee whose job is affected by the shutdown will not receive backpay during the time that they are not at their jobs? Seems I remember they all got paid for the shutdown during the previous admin.

This would put the Dems on the spot I think seeing as to how the vast majority of employees identify as lefties.

If I were Trump, I shut it down myself until Congress passes a fricking budget...CRs is not the way to keep the government functioning.

I remember not so long ago the Republicans being willing to shut down the government just to stroke Ted Cruz's ego.
