The first two are two of the most interesting RPGs I've played over the last 10 or so years. True JRPGs with some very unique systems, and I put the first one up there with the Chrono Trigger, FF6, Secret of Mana tier of games.

They've taken it a little more anime than they have in the past, but the combat and world-building are usually top notch. Reviews are solid, and I'd highly suggest to anyone as a sprawling epic after Zelda. I probably put 200 hours into the first game and 150 or so into the second. They are often that big.

84/100 on Metacritic
quote:

The overall depth of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and how well it all ties together is astounding. Though higher expectations mean it is less of a stunning revelation than the first game, Monolith Soft has risen up tall to meet those expectations and delivered spectacularly in every area. 2017 has been one of the greatest years in RPG history; Xenoblade Chronicles 2 caps that off in mesmerising fashion by being one of the finest titles of the year.

What makes all of this effort worth it is the sense of awe that comes from exploring the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It’s a place that makes you feel miniscule. In this universe, humanity lives on the backs of giant creatures called titans, which are big enough that they’re essentially continents, walking through a mysterious sea made of clouds. There’s an incredible thrill that comes from running through an open plain and looking up to see what appears to be a moving mountain, that actually turns out to be the rocky neck of a towering creature. These moments never seem to get old, as the game continually throws new and strange places at you. At one point, you’re actually swallowed by a titan, only to discover a fantastical ecosystem living inside of it.

The first one was hands down my favorite game on the WiiU. I loved everything about it from the customization to exploring the universe they built, to the fighting. Every aspect of it.

As i get older, i enjoy these games alot more than a fast paced shooter. It a fun game to spend hours on. Just running around and exploring the world they created is worth buying the game if you're into massive open world exploration games.

I have this one pre-ordered and will be picking it up from Gamestop at 11 tonight.

Can't wait. In full Nintendo fanboy mode.

Put another notch into the "reasons the Swtich is the best console out there for me" belt.

Same, I just hope they can keep it up, and Xenoblade is a series i just don't want to see go away. They are really the only statewide JRPGs that get the old school feel right.

agreed.

There is no telling how much of my childhood was spent playing Secrets of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and A LttP on Super Nintendo.

No. I like physical game copies. And I like carrying all of them in my case and switching them out. It's a stupid nastalgia thing, but I like it. Reminds me of my Gameboy.

That is about as high praise as you can give a JRPG. I never played the first one, but I just got a Switch this week and once I beat Zelda I'll be looking for something new.

If you like JRPGs, it's an easy recommendation if you can get past the anime look.

I admit it is cool.

My problem is buying Kart a d Snipper clips per download first. So only game I have is Zelda in physical copy. So just continued the download.

It does look cool.

My practice is - Big Single Player Games on carts - BotW, Odyssey, Doom, Xenoblade - everything else as downloads. Personally, I don't want to carry around a bunch of carts. I usually keep one in the unit, whatever is on my mind at the moment, while I travel.

I need to purchase that game while on sale.

I do have the NBA street game, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and snipper clips downloaded.

But splatoon, Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, and now xenoblade I have cartridges for. There's just something satisfying to me about clicking that cartridge into place.

So what’s the verdict here? The game looks like what final fantasy used to and should be...is it good?

This was easily a day one for me and I sprung for the Collector's edition.

I haven't played this one, but see above. I think the first one is right up there with the JRPG greats. The combat system is somewhat complex, but it works, and this one apparently tweaks it for the best. The stories are usually good, and it is a continuation of the first, in some form. The exploration is top notch, and for me, probably the best of any JRPG. Sometimes the characters aren't necessarily as good as your Celes, Cyan, Rydia, Spoony Bards, etc., but still very good.

They are unique in the space as the combat is more MMORPG like, but it works really well. The three most important things in a JRPG for me are: Story/Characters, Exploration, and Combat/Customization. And they generally get high marks in all of those. This one in particular brings in a pseudo-Pokemon type search and collect thing. The weapons in the Game are called "Blades" and they are actually both a weapon that you wield and a character that follows you. (Blades are axes, swords, spears, etc. not just blades). These blades have to be found and can be heavily customized through a few different systems. In the picture above - the Large Cat, the girl in red, and the other girl are all blades following their Drivers. That's how it works in the game.

The combat is layered with Special Build Meter, Combos, Status Chaining (you knock someone down then another status attack will do more damage), elemental chaining and all kinds of stuff to build to really big attacks. It sounds complicated - and it can be - but like any really great game they build to let the user control the experience. If you want to get into the combat in depth and master it, the game has a lot of challenges to test you in the form of usually super big bosses and enemies/areas. If you don't, I'm guessing you won't have to master the combat to beat the game. Seemingly, they also have a new feature to control over and under leveling that looks simply ingenious for RPGs. It will allow you to move forward and complete whatever quests you want without overleveling, but allow you to tap into extra experience if you run into a fight or situation that you are underleveled for. I'm kind of exited to see that honestly, because I did overlevel myself in the first game because I was doing every sidequest imaginable.

I would highly recommend the game if you like RPGs at all and can either get interested in or past some of the anime tropes.

On anther note, the Soundtracks are always Fantastic, as in the Xenoblade Chronicles soundtrack is probably my favorite RPG soundtrack not named FFVI.

I should post some negative reviews to be fair though:

LINK

quote:

Xenoblade 2 consistently displays a frustrating lack of respect for the player’s time. Everything takes significantly longer than it needs to, in part because the game contains such an overwhelming number of features. It can take dozens of minutes to navigate the clunky menus, sort through all of the characters’ upgrades, and manage a collection of Pokémon-like Blades. The mini-map is vague and often feels like it’s withholding information. There are no larger maps to be found, so you’ll have to rely upon UI markers to figure out where you need to go.

Battles are long and tedious, and many of them dragged on even after I’d fully learned how the combat system worked. The otherwise satisfying battle combos became much less interesting after I had to repeat them on every bullet-spongey trash mob in my path. And when I wasn’t grinding levels or taking care of some of the game’s menial sidequests, boss fights often prevented me from making any progress, especially during those moments when Xenoblade 2 arbitrarily decides to limit the party to two characters as opposed to the standard three.

LINK

quote:

On this and many other levels, Xenoblade 2 exhibits admirable depth. Adventurous types that enjoy complex combat systems can easily spend more than 100 hours uncovering Alrest's secrets and developing their team of Blades, provided they can come to terms with a handful of unavoidable shortcomings. It's equal parts pleasing and frustrating, but the struggle to keep up with everything thrown your way is more of a hurdle than a roadblock. It will be a tough pill to swallow for people who aren't accustomed to the typical cliches found in many Japanese RPGs, and its often clumsy nature keeps it from being the next groundbreaking Switch game, but Xenoblade 2 is worth pursuing if you've got enough patience to let it blossom.

I like this. But i hope they keep the fun aspect of the monster levels while you explore as well. I liked running though a field and slaughtering little creatures only to run over a mountain and then accidentally running into a pack of high level badass creatures i had to run away from.

Is it bad that i look at every negative in this review as a positive and a reason i like the game?

I think that quote is what this game comes down to. If you like long games with hours of customization and seemingly endless exploration with little direction then you'll love the game. If not, then the game isnt for you.

I love reading the reviews where people complain about the time it takes to do things, then over-expansive customization, and the long team battles.

That's the equivalent of complaining about close quarters gun fights, and lack of respect for true firearm marksman techniques in call of duty.
