It is pretty much what he said. You may see it as “boxed in” but I also think it was an appeal to the boosters who were extremely pissed he was retained after 2016. Woodward has his own job to worry about as well and knew there was zero chance he would be allowed to retain Sumlin after another year like 2016 which is exactly what we had
There was definitely program/booster maintenance that needed to be done with Woodward's comments. He made the right call in my opinion. His results on the field simply weren't commiserate with that amount Sumlin was paid annually. Aggy is willing to pay what it takes, but the coach has to produce on the level that he's being paid. I don't think that's unreasonable. The buyout stuff though has been pretty ridiculous. Schools like A&M that are paying significantly above market need to start having more one-sided buyout terms as part of the balance.

FSU is a better situation. That's gotta worry you somewhat.

You're basically banking on Jimbo revitalizing his career because the past three seasons, FSU has looked awfully pedestrian against mostly teams who don't have 1/10 the talent Jimbo runs out on the field.

I agree. The payment in 60 days thing was the most absurd part of Sumlin’s buyout.

I never thought he was a slam dunk hire. This season kinda validates that, doesn't it? I think you are too quick to dismiss what happened at FSU this season. Major red flag. Elite coaches with success in their future don't have seasons like that.

Revitalizing? He went 10-3, 10-3 and this year he wasn't able to manage the hurricane in my opinion. Les Miles' job during Katrina was underrated, but I don't think that means it is easy. This year has been tough, but I don't think it necessarily means Jimbo has lost it. It is a concern, though. Maybe his fire/desire doesn't burn as brightly with the divorce etc.? That said, it is a risk aggy would be smart to take.

....and the point remains that you have to beat those 6 programs that are better than aTm to win championships...at FSU he only has two teams that are ranked better than FSU, although you can probably swap out GT for Clemson.

Everything else being equal, I think FSU is a better job. If aggy wants to pay him a ton annually, give him a massive term, and guarantee him a large sum, I think that would nullify the situational context.

That isn't true, but it is also a big factor. FSU has tradition and that tradition assists in recruiting nationally at a level that isn't currently being done at A&M. That doesn't mean it can't be done, but just objectively looking at the two programs, FSU has some advantages beyond just not being in the SEC.

True, but that commitment is more recent. Jimbo lost some coaching talent to other programs. For instance, Georgia took Pruitt from them. In terms of commitment in the SEC, Georgia hasn't traditionally been a program that was willing to do that. That opened many eyes, I think and ruffled Jimbo a bit.

The biggest thing Jimbo will have to overcome is the lack of physical culture we currently have, and getting those players in the front 7 when your primary recruiting base is TX where the spread is king.
If we were going to make a big hire I liked Jimbo over someone like a Gundy because he’s been at programs that have that culture and he’s recruited (and has staff that have recruited) in the areas that I think we need to target more right now to instill it.

A&M has an incredibly high ceiling, we just have done a crap job of taking advantage of it. There is really nothing we don't have from a resource perspective that keeps us from being an elite program, we just haven't been because we are fantastic at stepping on our dicks and underachieving.
While true, the same has been said about Arizona and Arizona State for years. They have a ton of money available, especially in and around Phoenix. Great facilities for the PAC 12. Very fertile recruiting grounds in AZ and CA. Either one could blow up into a powerhouse in football with the right coach and system. Yet they don’t. They have been all potential and talk for 20 years.
A&M has more money and a bigger recruiting ground than those two, but they are still valid examples that programs can have all the separate pieces and potential and never quite get there.
These ingredients don’t come together just because they happen to exist in the same space. You guys get made fun of around here because of the constant assumption that it is a forgone conclusion that you will take over college football because of money + Texas + SEC. The equation of success in college football is a lot more complicated than that.
And I’m not saying that it will never happen. It’s just not inevitable. A&M has never proven that it can put the pieces in place and keep them all there. Neither has LSU or anyone else in the SEC other than Bama, for that matter.

That's true. Also, he has built a defense (in terms of players) where he is. He will have to undertake that effort in College Station. For whatever reason, that has proved very difficult since A&M moved to the SEC. I don't think that means no one can do it, but it is a factor if everything else is equal. At FSU, he's a qb away probably. At A&M, there are quite a few more pieces that need to be in put in place.
