Danny was a step slow yesterday

Not on the field. A different place.
I got to the bottom of the hill a little earlier than usual and had a great spot. The players and coaches walked down with their usual fanfare. I was picking out all the players’ faces like any good fan would do. Then towards the last group I noticed that someone was a little slower in their gait. Just a step slower.
There was Etling glancing left, then quickly back to the right with a smile on his face that exuded nostalgia. He would point to fans, all while sipping every drop of the moment he could. He knew this was his last walk.
He reminded me of a senior in high school taking his last walk over the football field. A mom walking back through a house that she raised her kids in.
This man loves every bit of LSU and i’m Dang proud of him. He has exemplified grit, toughness, and leadership. All while never being in the media for the wrong thing.
We’ve piled on him for being inconsistent at times, but that’s not what i’m after here. Danny did his job on most occasions and i’m glad to have watched him these past couple of years.
Here’s to Danny!

I loved the kids heart and toughness. He had all the intangibles you want in a QB, he just lacked so many of the tangibles.
In the end I'll remember him as one tough SOB.

That's right on point. Proud to call him a true tiger!

Danny left it all out on the field every game. He got the most out of his ability and was agreat representative of the tem and the university.
He was 16-5 as a starter, with four losses being to nationally ranked teams, three on the road.
This young man will be a success in whatever he pursues.

You hit it on the nose. An article in the paper this morning said that was pretty much exactly what was going through his mind. He was savoring his last walk down the hill in his last home game as a senior.
I can still remember the last games for seniors for my son's years on his high school soccer teams. It was always a playoff game where a loss meant the end of the season and the player's playing days. A lot of kids gave it everything they had and didn't want to get up off the field after that final whistle. And the parents and players both would linger in the parking lot a long long time savoring those ties that were made.
You can tell Ettling loved the game, loved playing for LSU and was very nostalgic. I'm glad he had such a great game.

What exemplified his grit more than anything was the play where he just about got his face re-arranged with his face mask pushed in. He kept right on going. I think it was against Auburn last year. Maybe not the strongest arm in the world, and maybe not the fastest decision maker in check downs, but one of the easiest guys to pull for that I’ve ever seen.

The soon-to-be forgotten hero. The one who salvaged two seasons and a coaching change to keep some semblance of pride in the program and recruiting going forward. Tiger nation owes him so much gratitude.
He’ll never get a statue or plaque in his memory, but the least we can do is tell the little ones what a great, true tiger he was—the truest number 18 to never wear the number.

Imagine how sad we will be when a good quarterback leaves. He had grit and fight, but he was below average.

I’m with you on that. He took beatings and kept going. Great attitude and loved LSU. There just seems to be this attitude toward him like he got cheated out of the Heisman or something. “He won’t receive any plaques.” Well of course not. He wasn’t very good.
