Under Cantrell, does anyone think she'll really push for rent control?

saw that posted in a thread last night and it seems that it comes back to this debate answer
does anyone think she'll really push for this and/or have the political capital to enact it? that could be disastrous for Nola
oh and for the lulz, the next paragraph
later, Nola

The forum also touched on a handful of topics absent from recent debates. During a "lightning round" segment that allowed for only “yes” or “no” answers, Cantrell said she would support some kind of rent control in the city while Charbonnet said she would not.

Property owners in Jefferson rejoice.

rent control is a sure way to limit supply of housing
it's one of those classic policies that sounds like you're helping but you end up hurting poor populations more

I actually like this idea. make the fatties pay for clogging up the sidewalk and grocery isles.

Honestly, she will do absolutely nothing of consequence. Her bourgeois white donors will dictate her policy as always.

that seems like the popular opinion. she's not slick enough like Landrieu to really affect any meaningful change

I'm not sure how one would enjorce "rent control" with the housing stock of New Orleans. I certainly don't think Latoya could figure it out.

I have 6 rental units and have long term tenants in each. Have never raised rent ONCE in 7 years even with the increased water bills.
If this looks like it’s going to go through they are all getting a good $300-$400 increase or they are out. Sorry guys.
I’ve been great to you but I’m not allowing the government to force me to hold your low rent in place.

Wouldn’t rent control result in landlords offloading their property to owner-residents, thereby limiting the amount of available rentable property?

Yes.
Or raise the rent in advance of the control

what policy have they dictated in the past forty years? thanks

I can't see this working in no.
Too many old, wooden duplexes with sky high maintenence costs. This isn't Manhattan with high rise stone buildings managed by multinationals.
Besides, we already have rent control.

Maintaining the status quo. Corruption, mainly via city contracts. The occasional pot hole being filled. So no true policy platform, just typical "I'll wurk hawd" rhetoric while her backers in gated Audubon make sure she stays in her lane. The only thing I can see her stepping out a little on is the race hustle.
Do you even new orleans?

NOLA is going to get exactly what they deserve. High taxes with zero return on their money.
BR and NOLA will both have major corruption scandals withing the next 2 years.

None of that is policy or means that LaToya won't be a disaster

She has no policy and where did I say she won't be a disaster? The entire campaign was an idea-free, mud sling. She had more money than Desiree so she wins.
She'll be no different than Morial. The bar is so low, that status quo = disaster.
