Built this out of flagstone. Works like a champ. Hard to see, but on the sides I split one brick on the second level and only used a half so there is air flow. Also, below the pit is 3" of crushed rock and 3" of gravel to aid in drainage. The pit itself took 40 flagstone blocks from Lowe's at $2 each. If I did it again, I'd go to a local stone yard and buy irregular flagstone that I would just arrange myself, but I still dig the way I looks.

I'm really pleased with the whole set up: swing, pergola, gravel area and fire pit. Took some time and some sweat, but we really enjoy it.

That was actually my original plan but I hated the prefabbed look of those landscaping bricks. It didn't hurt that at the time Lowe's had a deal for 5 for $10 for the flagstone of the nearly identical size and shape that I thought looked better.

My wife bought me an lsu one from Goodwood a few years ago. Heavy duty and looks great.

Thats what I used, tore down an old flower bed and found a use for the landscape bricks, works great.

I don't know an exact number but it was ~ $2500-3000
